Banks and their merchant services provide the card reader machines and the transaction services for all these retail merchants. I guess you would have them do all this for free? It is a convenience service that the store can offer or not offer. No one is making them do it.

So, customers who want the convenience of using their card and are willing to pay the banks 3% on every transaction for that convenience are the reason?

The customers who also demand that small businesses try to trick them into thinking they're not paying 3% extra.

Is that who's to blame if not the banks finding a way to charge an extra 3% on every single purchase in the country?

Is paying with cash more convenient for businesses?

Several restaurants offer a credit card price and cash price which is a discount so apparently it is for them. Definitely, convenient for the wait staff.

Not so great for the small businesses that have to pay a percentage on every card payment they process.

Add 4% to price or quit accepting debit cards. Problem solved. Checks and cash are still acceptable forms of payment. If enough businesses follow suit, the customers will comply.

Yep. Now businesses will have to raise their prices to make up for the loss in profits. It's almost like lawmakers don't understand how any of this stuff works.

They can try that approach but if their product isn't worth the additional cost they will lose business. It's almost like this board forgets the fundamentals of supply vs demand. Not all costs can just arbitrarily be passed on to the consumer. Eventually, the margins will be squeezed or the volume of business will be reduced.

Customers are going to go where it's convenient for them. It's the main reason why we moved away from checks and cash in the first place.

The business can't afford to lose money from loss of customers to convenience.

All the posters on here saying “pay cash.”

I will go back to that once the minimum wage idiot at the register can take less than three minutes figuring out change on $4.95 purchase paid for with a $10 bill. I swear sometimes it looks like they are trying to solve a re entry orbit equation for the space shuttle.

The fee was already added into the price.

Yep and if not it will be. We all pay for the retailers fees through the cost of the item.

I take square with my business it runs all debit as credit. I don't charge an extra fee. I just raised my prices when I started taking cards years ago
But not everyone can prices debit as debit depends on the POS.

At my small business, I'm not going to trust anyone who can't make change to read the correct price off the tag or do anything else in my business for that matter.

That's not a cash problem but a management hiring or mega chainstore problem.

I like checks. I take them and scan them with my phone in front the customer. .
No fees. Always happy to take checks.
Haven't had one bounce in years.
I hold them two weeks then shred them.
I hate taking credit but that's the easiest. I like Gen Z customers because they use venmo or cash app and those don't have fees either.
I really hate Square but the are so easy to use and it's integrated into my other services I get from them.

I have a shop so checks don't work for me but I get it. I'd take them too if I did service jobs with higher price tags.

Venmo is great. So far.

I just really don't get the mindset of people who seem to be saying:

"I pay 3% more for the convenience of using my card but I can't stand thinking about that so I want businesses to hide it from me"

This may benefit everyone. You’d think businesses want an excuse to exclude the debit card shopping class, and now they have one.

Just curious, why do you want small businesses to hide from you that you pay extra for the convenience of using your bank card?

If it's so convenient can't you just tell yourself it's worth it?

Do you want cash customers to pay a bank fee for not using cash when they are using cash?

Just so you can pretend you don't pay 4% extra on every single purchase you make?

Not really because of the additional threat of robbery, having to safe, and physically deposit at bank. Cashless is the easiest for every business because it's all electronic.

Having said that, debit card fees should be fixed and not a percentage. It costs no more to process a $500 transaction than a $5 transaction.

I'm never swiping my debit card for fear of fraud charges.
Ditto, the only place I have ever used my debit card was at a USPS terminal to purchase a money order there. They don’t allow money orders to be paid for on a credit card.

That was quite a long time ago.

Separate your bank account and the credit card you use people.
