i don't think so unless for some strange reason you are going slower than the cars who have yet to merge.

How so? The only person that can cause the wreck there is the person in front.

The most amazing thing in this thread is that there are still licensed drivers who don't understand how tailgating is dangerous.

the left lane is not speed dependent. It is a passing lane. Stay out of it whether you are going 35 or 95 unless you are passing. When you finish passing, get back over.

1. This is false.

2. You could also say that if you're on a standard 70mph interstate, you should avoid going over 75mph, so there's that too

Slow left lane drivers that don't get over suck, but there is a flip side a-hole driver that wants the left lane driver to IMMEDIATELY move over into the right lane, even if he is in the process of passing people in the right lane. This is also the guy who wants to lane hop in busy traffic and cut in front of people last minute causing constant brake slamming.

There are so many variations of a-hole drivers and they all seem to be passing through Baton Rouge.

Only for terrible drivers who cause more accidents and traffic problems than fast drivers.

Thats up to you. Ive observed that less intelligent people generally tend to be the least courteous to others on the highway. If you are going less than 75 in the left lane on an interstate(with no traffic backups), you are causing potentially dangerous situations due to people passing on the right to get around you.

Its not your job to be the traffic police. Stay to the right and let people go fast if they want to

Actually, it's not up to me. It's the law.

Going 75 in the left lane to pass cars is fine, what are you talking about?

Read all your sentences in your post then reread the part where you said it's not MY job to be traffic police...

The bigger issue is morons that are cruising at a nice pace, 75 mph or so, but slam on their breaks and drop to 55 because they see a cop half a mile up the road.

Generally, you can be a competent driver by just not being a complete dumbass behind the wheel. This goes to both sides of the argument.

I have the same observations. I always wanted to keep my own stats on those, but didn't because I'm pretty sure of the conclusion.

Yes it is the law, but the flow of traffic on interstates is usually 5-10 mph faster than the speed limit, sometimes even faster.

I said less than 75 but im sure it was an honest oversight on your part. I also didn’t say there was anything wrong with going less than 75 but the left lane should be avoided as much as possible not entirely.

I reread my posts and I still agree with my original assertion. If someone is going slow in the left lane they are forcing everyone behind them to go that speed. If someone wants to go faster than me, I get over. If I feel like going 72 and am passing a line of trucks going 65, im gonna speed up a little to quickly pass the line, then get back in the right lane to go 72.

You seem to be implying that you dont think you have to change your speed to accomodate others on the road. I choose to be a courteous driver, not an a-hole

Agreed, I can't believe how many morons there are.
Wake up, people. You are required to be in control of your car. If you hit somebody from behind because you are tailtgating, NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO, it is your fault.

It actually is amazing how many dumbasses are in this thread don't understand this. It doesn't matter if that car in front of you slams on its brakes all the way to a complete stop in any lane of the interstate. You have a responsibility by law to be far enough back to not hit them or have to veer out of control. DONE.

How will you ever be able to prove they did it on purpose?

Alotta pent up rage drivers in this thread. Chill out bros.

I can't be sure, but in Louisiana I believe it is illegal to enter the left lane within 1000ft of an entryway to the interstate.

It's a he said, she said and usually the majority of the fault falls on the car behind. Dashcam reckless driving is a crime. Your post is dumb

The in the rear will be ticketed for following too closely, and causing an accident dash cam or not. If you were at the proper distance for your driving speed and road conditions you would not have hit the car in front of your regardless of what they did.

OVERTAKING AND PASSING, ETC.
§71. Driving on right side of road; exceptions
A. Upon all roadways of sufficient width a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway, except as follows:
(1) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing such movement, including passing lanes;
(2) When the right half of a roadway is closed to traffic while under construction or repair;
(3) Upon a roadway designated and signposted for one-way traffic.
B.(1)(a) Upon all multilane highways, no vehicle shall be driven in the left-hand lane except when directed otherwise, preparing for a left turn at an intersection or private road or driveway, overtaking or passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, or when right-hand lanes are congested; however, no vehicle being driven in the left lane except when directed otherwise or preparing for a left turn at an intersection, private road, or driveway shall impede any other vehicle that is traveling in the same lane and behind that vehicle.
(b) Upon all multilane highways, no vehicle traveling in the left-hand lane shall be driven at a speed slower than any vehicle traveling to its right on the same roadway.
(c) Upon all multilane highways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the circumstances then existing, shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic except when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway, or passing or overtaking a vehicle proceeding in the same direction, if passing on the left side of it. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to authorize driving any vehicle in the left lane so as to prohibit, impede, or block passage of an overtaking vehicle in such lane and in such event the vehicle in the left lane prohibiting, impeding, or blocking passage of an overtaking vehicle shall expeditiously merge into the right lane of traffic.
(d) The provisions of this Subsection shall not apply during a declared state of emergency when contraflow has been activated.
(2) In addition to the requirement of Paragraph 1 hereof, any vehicle proceeding on a multilane highway at a speed slower than ten miles per hour less than the posted maximum speed limit shall be driven in the right hand lane then available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing a vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway. Persons in violation of this Paragraph shall be punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars, or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both.
C. The Department of Public Safety and Corrections, office of motor vehicles, is directed to include a summary of this Section in any instructional publication for drivers.
D. The Department of Transportation and Development is directed to place signs on multilane highways, in an effort to make motorists aware of the provisions provided for in this Section.
E. The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and the Department of Transportation and Development are directed to cooperatively develop and engage a public awareness campaign to notify motorists of the provisions of this Section.
