I hate that Louisiana is losing small town staples

No more breakfast biscuits at the local gas station.
No more block ice for sale.
The old Italian owned food store is a habib.
Lady at the gas station charged 3.49 for a large coffee, which I'm fine with... But then 2.99 for the 2 oz of coffee in the old school Styrofoam baby cups for my little boy.
No boudin on deck.
Four old guys drinking coffee, not a one responded to my little boy's "good morning sirs"
God I miss the 90s.
No more block ice for sale.

From Avoyelles. I see it there also. Never would have imagined red dots owning convenience stores and fig people would be a thing. Most of our family and friends try to keep tradition alive. But I'm afraid it will be gone in one more generation.

They had an ice house on Florida Blvd nearer to downtown. Sold blocks and dry ice.

That’s true about block ice. I have zero experience or memories of anyone having it or needing it or wanting it and I’ve been around a decent a number of folks who could remember WWII and some who could also remember WWI.

I hated when all the individualistic wood-frame or cinder-block mom-and-pop country stores were replaced by crass, fluorescent-light lit quickie marts. The latter growing all the more grubby and bleak via the gradual domination by foreign ownership. Talk about losing cultural and societal fabric.

I’m almost 50 years old and have lived in Louisiana all my life. In rural and urban areas in North and South Louisiana.

I’m 61 and I definetly remember block ice. Not nearly as convenient as bag ice, but lasts one hell of a lot longer.
The single most important tool in my home is an ice pick….i don’t guess people buy those anymore!
