I saw two new ones going up a few weeks ago.
Amazing what happened to that place in such a short time span.
They'd sell every square inch of beach to investors if they could. Public beaches would be gone. The beach would be a luxury for the rich.

One of the reasons I love the islands and beaches here, they’re lined with houses. Only one beach kinda has a high rise on it, but it’s one building.

You would be very surprised. Sometimes I feel like I live in a bubble down here. City does a great job of spending that tax money from the tourist. I’m in heaven compared to where I was living. (Baton Rouge)

I hate places like that with so many high rises. I'd rather go to a state park or something where there's nothing around. The best beach I ever saw was the national seashore at Canaveral.
The Eglin AFB NCO Club has a primo beach and no high rises.

Hasn't been the NCO beach club since Hurricane Opal.
Opal took out both the NCO and Officer beach clubs and Eglin just made an "all ranks" beach club at the site of the NCO beach club.
That is a nice stretch of the island without condos etc. I believe if the USAF ever declares it surplus, it goes to the state or county.

Perdido Key
Is still much more low key. Luckily they have been much stricter with zoning.

I like the Caribe. Nice. built in the early 2000s.

Are the public who live there paying taxes to support the beaches? Just curious. If so, perhaps whomever owns those high rises / private beaches should be solely responsible for same with zero public funds used.

Shhhhh on that Dauphin Island thing. Don't want Kevin and Karen along with Jaxon, Braxton and Ella coming in and ruining the place. Because they will.

the owners are paying property tax, which goes to the schools, roads, parks, libraries, police, fire dept., etc., beach maintenance, comes from grants, ad valorem, tax, even Federal grants/aid

Ok, thx. How are those services? Do the officials use the funds as they are supposed to vs here where funds are pocketed and education and roads still poor? Looks like these things are funded well via property taxes, that’s great.

I don't think anybody can make the officials accountable for use of tax dollars, anywhere

Both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores high schools have covered football practice fields. From the outside the high schools do not look like Alabama. The Gulf Shores school is brand new, opening this year I think. Anybody can see it at the last stop light on the bypass. The bridge for the bypass also just got its capacity doubled.

Gulf Shores does a great job of using those tax dollars along with getting huge amounts of grants for smart growth. The school system is one of the top in the country. They seperated from Baldwin County and run The City School system. Just built a $140 million dollar high school with state of the art sports facility, culinary and hospitality program and now areospace program in conjunction with the Airport upgrading to an International airport. The kids built and flew its own plane last year. Fire Department, police, and life guards and emergency services are top notch. Gulf Shores pays for ambulance and air med rides for all residents. Roads are improving but that has a lot to do with ALDOT not the City.

The water there is nothing like the water starting over by Ft. Morgan, across the mouth of Mobile Bay.

I've read through the complaint, and motion to dismiss. She filed an amended complaint this year but I haven't read it yet.
Mayor gets arrested. She said she filed public records request for all body cam footage, police reports, etc. City refused to provide records so she sued in federal court, not state court (public records laws are state laws). She claimed city violated her first amendment rights and other constitutional rights as well.
City came back and said in the motion to dismiss that Alabama law states that a city or government agency can create its own public records request procedures and require those requesting records to fill out a form the government provides (in this case Orange Beach). It's pretty standard and is the case here in Mississippi.
Well, she didn't do that. She submitted emails requesting the records. Didn't submit a form, didn't follow the procedures and oh, the city of Orange Beach has an online portal for public records requests.
She claimed that didn't matter as she argued there was "substantial compliance" with the law. It's a term used by Democrat lawyers when they are trying to get illegal votes counted (See the hanging chad brouhaha).
The city also denied her request because she was asking for investigative materials. That is a standard exception. You can get police incident reports in most places but they also don't have to turn over witness interviews, footage, etc usually until the case is adjudicated. She claimed constitutional violations over that one.
NOW, if anyone thinks I am taking up for Kennon, guess again. He probably beat his wife while naked on a beach balcony. I suspect what will happen is OBPD will keep the investigation going forever or it will never prosecute him and thus claim the case is never adjudicated.
As I said, I have not read the amended complaint so there might be more info.
