I don’t get the allure of going to a beach with no people and just sitting out there all day… pretty boring if you ask me

This after sitting in traffic all morning. Then sitting/standing around waiting to get a table for dinner. No thanks.

We own two condos in OB and we don’t go unless it is the off season, even when they have vacant days. It is too hot and crowded. October through May is great. The crowds start disappearing and traffic is manageable. Even in December you have some 70 degree weeks down there.

I know some people that go and never venture away from the beach. They don’t go to Owa, the zoo, the outlet malls, no golf, go carts or Fort Morgan. They just want to sit on the beach and get plastered for a week. I don’t get that part either.

I’ll be honest - I’ve been surprised that it’s been a lot more house/neighborhood style 30A type developments the last couple of years versus the 25 story condo towers.

Normally it’s 7 stories for emergency and construction. It may not be for realty reasons though. I’m in construction field, not realty.

The challenge of Orange Beach isn't just the new hi rises, its transportation and workers. There is a finite amount of space on an area surrounded by water, even if you add more lanes/capacity to get there (which has been done), all you do is add more cars to an area with no space to fit those cars. Its one of the few areas where structured/garage parking is economically feasible, but those cars still have to get there, and people want to drive to stuff once there. Hence, unsolvable congestion in peak season. More transit, shuttles, etc. would help, but that doesn't solve the problems because people will always drive to the beach.

Second, where do service workers (cleaning crews, beach maintenance, cooks, bartenders, retail workers) live, and how do they get to work. They mostly drive because they can't afford to live on the beach or close to work, which makes even more congestion. It also contributes to a bigger problem, sucky service and amenities. Again some transit, shuttles, etc. would help, but in the end its a land and geography issue.

There is no real fix other than to say no to new development, but that is not how the development machine works. I try not to go anymore in the summer, but not everyone has that option.

I was naive to sand life and turned my 2wd truck into some sand while turning on 98. Got my arse stuck. Some locals helped me

Did you happen to give said locals a few beers or like $10? Because that may have been me. Thats how we could make a little beer money in my teens was to pull people out of the sand when they would park where they shouldn't have been.

We went to perdido last year and paid $1,800 for a condo for 5 nights. Not sure where some of yall get your prices. I prefer mountains and woods also but we change it up. I probably spent $2,500 total for 5 nights and 4 people. And that’s not sharing cost, it was wife and I and 2 boys.

I saw two new ones going up a few weeks ago.

Amazing what happened to that place in such a short time span.

And how many damn hotels are they going to build in Destin?

I’m in Ft Morgan everyday. Very chill and plenty beach for everyone. They are also doing a ton of building with most of those condos sleeping 20-30 people if folks need to be in the same house with the whole family. Beach Club also nice amenities on site if you need those kinds of things. My family stays on Ponce De Leon every year at a house with a pool. They pack enough food not to leave the beach house all week except the Adults indulge 1 meal at Jesses. Cook all fish, crabs, and oysters we get during the week.

It’s just as cheap, and less hassle to go on a cruise than sit in traffic near the beach. I’m not talking about Carnival cruises, either. My wife is a 10 year+ travel agent, I know the score.

No doubt. You can go stay at a top tier Cancun all inclusive resort with 100x the amenities for what you're paying to stay on the gulf coast.

My student job 25 years ago was running mail on campus from The Vet School to Lod Cook and most major offices in between. You would be surprised what people send in to the Vet School. Especially after 9/11 and the anthrax scare.

Well, Louisiana and Texas are the reason they are going up. Go somewhere else and they won’t have a need to build them.
I was staying off canal this weekend at a friend’s place and the amount of out of state plates was kinda ridiculous.

This was the first time I stayed in ob in over a decade, it’s just too overcrowded for me. Y’all have completely ruined what was a nice laid back town . Now it’s a 2hr wait for every restaurant and good luck heading back west. Another 2-3 hours of bullshite traffic to deal with.

It was the coonasses decked out in purple and gold causing a scene at Tacky Jack's last night.
