I don't disagree with you. I just figured I would be able to trust an acquaintance at his word. And would think he would rectify the situation by allowing me to return it. That's what I would do in the same situation. But yeah, the blame ultimately lies on me.

If your "mower guy" knew anything about motors he would have tried turning it with a wrench and knew right away that the mower was locked up. Your loss, sorry it happened to you.

Anyone who buys something that is listed with this line deserves what they get. You are relying on someone over the internet who either

A. Doesn't know how to work on a carburetor, and if that is the case, sure wouldn't know if that is the issue with the engine

B. Is telling you he "doesn't have time to just buy a new carb for <$100 and slap it on" SURE...

C. Knows it is bad, knows how to work on carbs, but is trying to get some money out of it

NEVER buy something that is listed as "ran when I put it up last year" or "needs new carb" because that is a lump of crap.

I have a solution for you.

List it on Facebook marketplace for $900 and let people know that you’ve been told it needs a new carburetor.

Love it when bargain hunters get screwed. $800 for a zero turn lawn mower is your first red flag. Takes 15 minutes to remove and clean a carb. If he legit thought that was the issue he wouldn’t have been selling it.

If it was only going to cost $100 to fix it, did you never wonder why the owner wasn’t going that route himself?

You keep saying trust. What trust was broken? He literally told you it didn’t run.

What's preventing you from buying a new engine for it?

You can get a 20 HP Briggs and Stratton for another $900 and you will pretty much have a new mower for way cheaper than you would pay for a new one.

I side with OP - the seller should most definitely refund him

What's the actual engine issue? It still may be repairable for a few hundred and some elbow grease.

This all day. Small engines are extremely repairable.

I tell you what. I'll come take it off your hands and I won't charge you a penny.

Where you at?

And there is a -10000% chance the person who picked it up intentionally screwed me over.

How so?

He thought something was wrong with it. Your buddy who knows lawn mowers thought the exact same thing, so how are you so certain?

Exactly. A “minor fix” is a minor fix for both parties involved.

You thought you were getting a really good deal and were going to get the mower for far less than it’s worth (ie screwing the seller). You got what you deserved for trying to screw the seller.

So I send someone out that knows way more about lawn mowers than me to pick it up if all is well. Everything the guy says about what he had done to it checks out. So I purchased the lawn mower.

I think changing the blades out are probably a bigger pain in the arse than cleaning the carb. And if was only a $100 to do, he would have got it done.

I woukd have never bought it before checking to make sure. At least not at 800, maybe a couple hundred just in case you have to put a new engine on it. Unless it was a woman selling it, because they are dum. Once had an ex trade in a car just because she didn’t feel like changing the tires on it.

Dead give away when they name all the things they fixed but somehow was a $100 short of getting it running .. obviously new it was shot or he would have got it running and then either used it or sold it at a higher price

While frick that guy for lying, you willingly spent $800 on something that you knew didn’t work.
