I’ll ask again.

So what’s wrong with the engine? Is it frozen?

Only $100 to get cleaned was a red flag

Someone telling me it would "cost $100 to clean a lawnmower carb" is a red flag. That would take all of 20 minutes.

Sorry you got bamboozled, OP but hope it's a lesson. Don't ever pay for something that doesn't work, while relying on the opinions of dipshits

Naw, you just paid $800 for a life lesson. Money well spent.

Explains all the things he changed (new blades, new battery, etc). Says the machine won't start because the carbeurator needs to be cleaned, but he has never changed one before.
you believed he changed all of the above, but wouldn’t spend $100 to get the carb cleaned?

Does that really make sense? Caveat emptor

^^^This is what you need to know. Small engines aren't complicated. If the engine turned over when he tried to strat it then just check the compression first to see if the engine is trash or not. Small engine repair shop told my brother his Ryobi pressure washer was "blown" so he was going to trash it. I told him bring it to me, compression was good so I priced a carb kit ($18) but a whole new carb was $35. replaced it 10 minutes and he's been using the last 2 years. Don't take a shop's word for it being trash. There are very few true mechanics left in the world.

So I send someone out that knows way more about lawn mowers than me to pick it up if all is well. Everything the guy says about what he had done to it checks out. So I purchased the lawn mower.

then your beef isnt with the seller, its with the idiot you sent out there that did a half assed job of checking out the mower.

i used to fix mowers, and 2 seconds and a squirt of starter fluid would have shown it had engine issues and its not the carb.

if you are lucky then just replacing the head gaskets will fix it if its a compression issue. the head gaskets often fail because the head bolt design patterns dont give much pressure in some areas of the head gaskets so they blow out.

youtube videos show how easy replacing head gaskets are and its easy, not like with car engines LINK

PS - if a lawnmower engine spins freely and isnt locked up, there is a 98% chance nothing is really wrong with it and it just needs a head gasket replaced or a new carburetor to make it run like new again

What he said.

If it is of normal difficulty to pull start, it probably has compression. If you unscrew the spark plug and it is much easier to pull, it has compression.

YouTube has a video on just about everything.

Check Amazon for a Chineziem carb if you don't want to clean it yourself. Maybe that is all it needs.

You learned a valuable lesson, but its likely salvageable...even if you end up going to Harbor Freight for a new vertical shaft motor...

Yes, he should have acted in good faith, but humanity in general gets faithless when it comes to money. I don't believe for a second he didn't know it was shot.

It's a shame you can't trust people to do right, but you can't. Some of them would sell their busted mower to their own mother on SS.

you gotta make the guy start the lawnmower before you buy it

Yes, that's the bottom line.

Also, no matter what is wrong with a carbureator an engine will almost always start with starter fluid. Best way to tell if the engine is really bad or if it is a carbureator problem. Engine will usually run as long as you spray starter fluid into the intake. $5

That sucks but it’s just $800 I’d just eat it. Who was this lawn mower expert that didn’t realize this? What a bozo that’s who you should be mad at

If it was only 100 to fix, anyone that bought a $3K mower would've fixed it.

Here's your options:

1. Watch some Youtube videos on this mower/engine and learn some new skills replacing the motor. (may not even need to do this, what is the actual problem?)

2. Eat the $800 and sell it for parts.

That's it. Unless you want to try to take the $800 out of the original owner's hide. Good luck.
