The return lost by trading in a car is a convenience fee. I would literally pay thousands of dollars to no deal with selling a car on the private resale market.

From what I recall, you also get tax benefits by trading in a car. If you buy a $50k car and your trade in is worth $20k, then you only pay taxes on the $30k.

I messed up and posted an old office trailer for free on Marketplace

My father in law inherited a piece of property with an older house on it. Small(800 sq ft), needed work so he posted it on marketplace for $5k to be moved. The foundation was solid but it did need new flooring throughout and some other cosmetic items. He just wanted it gone but didn't want to post it for free because of the idiots. He said it was the most nerve wracking experience. He had gotten moving quotes to move it from $15-20k and people were asking him to go down on the price because of the moving costs. One lady came look at it and said "it needed too much work". Lady, what do you expect? The house is selling for 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS!

Facebook Marketplace
It's entertaining for me to see how much effort people will go through to sell things I would just throw away.

Sold the Motor Guide trolling motor that came with my boat on FB. Original boat owner upgraded to a new Fortrex not long before I bought the boat. Had the wife do the listing because I don't have FB. Had her type out specifically..."Price: 500.00. My husband said NO he will not take 475.00'.

It sat for a couple of weeks with no hits at all. Then one guy said he'd take it. Simple and easy. Motto of the story is be specific and direct with your post and list it for 25% more than you actually want for it.

I’d rather get raked over the coals on my trade-in than deal with some of the ding dongs you encounter trying sell online.

I’ve sold my truck and boat on FM. They both sold quickly and I got what I wanted for them. You have to weed through the idiots but it’s pretty easy to do. I’ve been pleased.

Yet you still get bothered with dumbasses messaging and you having to read the message to weed out the idiots from legitimate buyers.

The point is to make it painless, and that "Firm Price" doesn't stop them bothering you w/ BS

or "is this available?"

In fairness to this question, I’ve made offers on things before only to be told “It’s already sold.”

Then why is the ad still posted? If you gave it to your drug dealer offline at least take the fricking thing down.

I don't know when this shite started, but it's by far the silliest aspect of it. We don't live in a barter economy for a reason.

I had people offering me a goat and chickens for my kid's game system.

On the buyers' side, when I'm looking for a vehicle for sale on Facebook Marketplace, I I'm looking for "private party" offerings in hopes to get a decent deal.
However, 90+% of listings are all used car dealer listings.

i used to sell cars for a living on marketplace. Craigslist was alot better for that 10-15 years ago. Now the marketshare kinda goes between the two on cheap local cash stuff so neither is a great platform anymore. Your area is probably littered with morons wanting to pay half price for a vehicle and thinks he's gonna turn around and resell it or just has 1200 for a 4000 dollar car. You've gotta be patient for a serious buyer though. I bought a truck last year cash off marketplace and I could tell the seller was impatient already with questions on fb messenger. And i'm a strong buyer

I don't care what anyone says...taking the hit by trading it in at the dealer is worth every penny of not having to deal with idiots showing up at your house or office to whip your nuts over your asking price and their various bullshite questions.

Long story, but i ended up with a car dolly that was worth a couple hundred bucks. Listed it on FB on a Sunday morning, sold it for $500 in about 90 minutes. Could have sold five more just like it.....

Most of the crap people want to barter with me is nothing I would be interested in. Someone wanted to trade a dirt bike for my truck. I did accept a barter once. I was selling an older smartphone for $100 and some guy wanted to trade a 2014 Mac Book Pro for it. I accepted the offer and then the guy says "Oh, by the way, I live in Shreveport and broke my foot and I drive a motorcycle so I can't meet you but you're willing to come meet me here.

I live in Lafayette.
