re: Few things are as demoralizing as the experience of selling a car on Facebook Marketplace

I learned that this is offensive but still not sure why. Seems like a reasonable inquiry.
A lot of bots send this inquiry and then try to scam you. Also, people accidentally hit the "Is This Available" button and then never respond because they didn't mean to ask about the vehicle.
If you're selling a cheap vehicle >$10k, Facebook Marketplace is worth the trouble, IMO.
Anything higher, use AutoTrader or something similar. Bringatrailer is gaining a lot of popularity for collector type vehicles.
Carmax seems like a painless experience, but you'll obviously get less.
If you have a specific type of vehicle, especially if it's sought after, try to find and join Facebook groups dedicated to those vehicles, that allow listings.

I personally have had good luck selling items on Facebook marketplace. I usually exchange detailed messages, come to a price, and meet with the buyer or seller.

A lot of it depends on where you live. It's also fairly easy to determine who's serious or not within a question or two.

I’m actually looking for a vehicle for my son now, what you selling?

Everything in life has trade offs. You are accepting the hassle of everything that comes with making that extra profit.

I'm lucky. I live by Major intersection so all I have to do is just put a for sale sign on the vehicle in my driveway and within 2 or 3 days I have it sold.

Id rather take the small hit of selling to carmax over trying to sell on Facebook marketplace. Carmax is easy, low time investment, and the check won’t bounce

I put on my ads that a 10% surcharge is added every time someone asks me if it is available or goes lower than my firm price

This is genius!

I'm sure you told him to pound sand huh?
I think the OP should have told the guy that because it's a birthday gift, I'll have to raise the price $1k because gifts shouldn't be cheap.

Buying isnt much better. I messaged several people selling a dirt bike asking to meet so I could see it and that I was extremely interested. Half didnt get back to me, a third got back days later. Only 2 or 3 people actually returned my message.

Autotrader has served me well over the years and no "Is it available" messages 10 X a day...
This. Much less BS.

Fair enough. I’m willing to pay a little more vs deal with the people you are talking about, not to mention the safety.
This is why I trade in. I make less no doubt. But all the paperwork is taken care of, there’s no one calling me a month later to complain about the car, and I don’t have to fool with idiots, scammers (besides the car salesman themselves) or being murdered over a few grand.

Maybe you're the problem? I don't mean to be a smartass but maybe you're doing it wrong.
I have bought/sold a lot on FB marketplace including 2 vehicles (sold a truck for $31k and bought a car for $12k) and have never had a problem. I have also bought/sold furniture, electronics, tools, plants, etc. It's pretty easy if you know what you're doing and use common sense. Like someone said, check their profile before interacting (especially the seller ratings) , meet in public places, end the conversations that are clearly going nowhere. And always give feedback. If you use the built-in features available then marketplace is a great place to do business.

quote:I've done that with an old truck. The potential buyer agreed with the concept until we met in person, at which point he started "negotiating". I drove away, then called the next buyer and sold it at my HARD PRICE the same day.
Just list it, put the price as HARD, NON NEGOTIABLE
People just don't give a shite about wasting someone else's time.

I don’t know why people get upset asking if it’s available either. I’m inquiring about it and very often it’s still listed after it’s sold. So frick off if I’m asking if it’s available to purchase.
If you make an offer, and it's not available, then they will say "it's not available" or just not respond.
If you make an offer and it is available, they will respond to the offer or just not respond.
"Is it available" gets you nothing and many sellers will ignore you for it.
If it is available it just wastes the seller's time, plus, "is it available" guy almost always has 3 more back and forth questions before making an actual offer, which will be a ridiculous lowball.
If it's not available and they're too lazy to take the post down, the chances are good they are also too lazy to tell you it's not available.

Bc there are always a dozen people asking if it’s available who then disappear after being told yes
