Sounds like people just came up with excuses. Especially the one saying they couldn’t get time off- they had plenty of notice.
It’ll be quite without all the drama.
We have an annual hiking trip to GC that requires a lot of planning for lodging that has to be booked in advance.
So we have had as many as 6 commit but only the same 3 always show up.
So now if anyone shows interest we tell them the dates and location and let them book their own rooms.
It’s funny the same 3 have always showed up for the hike so we don’t worry about the others.

yeah - my now wife (was my GF dating at the time) was supposed to go to Amsterdam and see within temptation in concert, and then spend a few weeks going around areas in Europe.

the day before our flight out, the volcano in Iceland or Greenland, don't remember which, erupted and fricked air travel up - needless to say we could not get the correct flights, would not have made the concert and scrapped the whole thing.

We used to plan these kinds of trips. Turns into a nightmare, like trying to herd cats. Then, some people get all pissy, because everyone wants to do one thing, then someone else another, then someone gets decided against and then you have hurt feelings.

We seem to be the one's motivated to plan these, so we stopped. We make our own plans well in advance, send everyone the info, and then that's it. They show up, great! If not, we aren't letting their absence affect our good time together making memories.

It sucks the memories won’t be shared with those unable to make it. But fuccccccck them! Go make the best of it with who’s there and have a wonderful time! Might be a blessing in disguise

Money is spent, and if I have to pay for the whole damn trip myself, oh well (I won't but I've budgeted enough).
Did you really plan this with them or was this 100% your idea and you tried to drag them along. If it truly was a group plan money should have been gathered up front.

It was easier when everyone really wanted to be together, prior to constant contact social media.

Extended families prioritized getting together over work schedules etc.

Only once that I can recall. I had planned a road trip out of state to a motorcycle rally in N. Carolina and was scheduled to leave at "0 dark thirty" one morning to make the 700 mile ride in one day and Mother Nature decided it was a great day to water the states of LA., MS. and parts of AL.-----three I had to navigate.

Had to put off leaving for a day.

Not vacation, but had about 10-15 people the day before/day of our wedding either text that they aren’t coming with questionable excuses.. or simply no call/no show.

Was told to expect that, but still kinda disheartening. Just RSVP no. Or tell me a few weeks before - which is totally fine. Paid nearly $2k for those no-shows.

I've come to terms with the facts that most people are flakes.

You are right. I'm rolling now. Got out the poor me swamp and moving. Got some of my moms unfailing optimism and good talk with Brother. It's gonna be a good trip and whatever else happens, happens.

Now I'm excited and motivated again. Be there storms and rough waters, we are going on an adventure

O was the tale of the vacation creator
Only to find out his closest were traitors

He organized this trip for himself and his kin
However it appears to be dead before it may even begin

He made his brother stilts out of the finest wood
And is now more angry at him than he is Henson's brood

Distant memories of fun has his heart a' screamin'
Upset in his bed because he literally can't even

Yeah, group trips (group anything, really) are a nightmare to me.

Even just traveling with another couple can be hit or miss. We did that once with friends of ours who have young kids, and their lifestyle was just so drastically different from ours that the trip sucked for us basically being on their schedule and doing what they wanted.

Everything from where we ate to what time we woke up was the polar opposite of what we'd have chosen just us two.

EDIT - The children were not on the trip, to clarify. It was just us and the couple. They just were so stuck on parent lifestyle that they continued that routine and it made for a bad time for us.

Got married 3/14/20 and had our honeymoon set for 2 1/2 weeks in Germany, Austria, and Italy. As the weeks, and ultimately days got closer, I tracked the Covid situation religiously. Week of, Italy and Germany had shut down. We discussed other countries briefly; however, we didn’t want to get stuck in a country unable to get back home.

This has happened a few times when a big group of friends try to put something together. It hasn't gotten to the point that I don't even commit in the first place because I know it will blow up in the end.

Oh dang, that's right when everything shut down.

We honeymooned in Mexico because we booked it when some countries were still getting cute with Covid lockdowns and didn't want to risk the trip going to shite as the time got closer. Mexico didn't give a shite
