staunch conservative against data centers. AI will harm more than it helps as it grows. I assume this is just part of the race to control it so China doesn't, though.

People fail to understand that this is our generations nuclear arm race. We do not want to lose to China with AI.

AI enables EVERYTHING at a much faster and more autonomous flow. China attacking our supply chains, networks, critical infrastructure??? Think how AI can enable them to do even more and go further...

Sure, but do it without inconveniencing the lives of citizens.

Seems easy enough, right?

Data centers are the power lines of the 90’s that give you cancer.

It seems to be inconveniencing the lives of just a few citizens that are loud and have money from China to help amplify it.

I know they are a financial windfall for counties/Parishes, but I don't see the benefit to the average person, and I'd never want one near me. Is there anyone who would want to live near a data center?

It's a lot of 1 time construction jobs and after that you just have a huge ugly building in a random place with a small headcount of staff that maintain it.

Its still a one time injection of a gazillion $ into a local economy that is usually pretty rural and rarely sees any form of meaningful investment into its economy.

Let's ignore the fact that when companies decide to expand a few years later there will likely be another "one time" investment into the economy that is starving for economic injection.

We should also ignore that the ugly building is full of expensive equipment that will quickly become obsolete and the company will pay sales tax on its upgrades.

I'm not anti-data center. However We have 3 approved and they are trying to get 2 more approved in our county. We have plenty of commercial/industrial zones to put these businesses, but they don't want that. Nope, they're buying residential land next to homes to drop these right in the middle of them. Of course the county govt is paid off and in bed with them before it ever started.

Just put them in commercial zoned parks that are sitting empty and I don't have a problem. Same with the warehouses. Stop trying to drop them in residential areas and fill the industrial parks.

For the few posters in here supporting more construction, or dismissing the inconvenience to nearby homeowners, would you live next to one? Let's say within a quarter mile. I find it hard to believe you would be willing.

The problem with AI and the data centers, are human. AI is great, as long as you use it with some apprehension. With the prevalence of AI progressing in the future, that apprehension will soon fade. Now you have a population who's entire learning base is coming from AI. That is frightening. And the companies that own the data centers, are the ones effectively, controlling the minds of those that lost that survival instinct.

- AI companies scraped the entire internet for their training content. They stole people's work.

- AI companies are now upset others are scraping their models. LINK

- AI CEOs hype their products talking about how powerful they are, then cry when taken at their word and the government decides to regulate them.

- AI data centers require massive amounts of power. More demand suggests higher energy costs.

- AI companies are openly bragging about how people will lose jobs.

- AI companies are using their huge power to capture market share. There is no sign they are even profitable at the current prices they are charging. Once the few companies that are large enough to build out these data centers have captured the market, prices will be increased to make up for the billions (trillions?) spent.

- Data center demand is driving up personal computing costs. A hard drive I bought at the beginning of the year for $250 is now $600. Apple had huge price increases today. LINK

- AI can be helpful but a large part of it is hype. A money making venture for tech bros.

Just some quick thoughts...

Any argument that is based on “destroying” water is invalid. Water that is turned into steam is not “lost” or “destroyed”, water that is returned warmer than it was is not “used”, “lost” or “destroyed”.

The only water on Earth that is lost or destroyed is the tiny amount we lose in space travel.

Also I have a theory that eventually these things will be obsolete. Like how computers took up an entire room in the 80s with the computing power of a Gameboy.

If quantum computing gets understood and built we will have super computers in mini towers basically

Some of it is, but they are poor economic development projects. Almost any alternative use will create more jobs.

Sure.

It just seems like all the usuals starting parroting the Chinese propaganda narrative at the same exact time.

That typically tells me it wasn't organic.

Data centers typically produce continuous noise levels ranging from 75 to 95 decibels (dBA) indoors and 50 to 65 dBA outdoors. Driven by heavy-duty cooling systems and constant server fans, this 24/7 noise output can cause significant workplace health hazards and severe community noise pollution

Imagine that. 50 PLUS dBA at all times in your house. You can't turn it off, you can't turn it down, you just have to learn to live with it. Just that constant high pitch hum. NOBODY is going to want to buy you house if they pull up and hear that sound and realize that's 24/7. Everyone will immediately know why you're selling lol.

I also think part of the problem is that the companies building the data centers know the noise pollution is a problem, but the only thing they can do is buy land way out in the middle of nowhere. Problem there is that farmers don’t want to sell that land for a data center to be built out there, so that’s why you’re seeing them pop up near these neighborhoods. There’s tons of videos and stories out there of farmers talking about how they turned down millions of dollars from data center companies for their land

You're thinking of the 60s and 70s.

I know because I had a computer in the 80s and it fit on my desk.
