"I know absolutely nothing about data centers and they aren't being built where I live but I hate that people don't want them because it does effect them so I am going to be pro data centers" is a common stance right now.

You’re told how to think by randoms on Twitter. Think about that.

The Meta data center in Richland will use less water than the paper mill which closed in Sterlington over a decade ago.

I have never complained about rice farms using water from aquifers

Just maintenance will mean jobs for the cooling system alone. and operators

Have you farmed lately? Farmers are gladly selling land for the numbers we are hearing. At least its profitable. They are noisy so middle of nowhere is best

Research is most of the need. Lots of conservatives who are scientist use the crap out of AI. It makes their work much easier and MUCH faster.

Grok, ChatGPT and Meta for free are useful for the goobers making anti data center memes though

That is very small use of AI and data centers.

The biggest use is social media, cloud storage and online ordering whether an airline ticket or Amazon.

Chevron uses the frick out it so is partnering with an AI company in a data center.

Weve always had data centers. People get so worked up over shite just because they are ignorant.

Data centers have been around for about 80 years. Their history traces back to massive, room-sized military and university computers like ENIAC in the 1940s

ETA: I do think there is a legitimacy to huge centers using up limited resources though, like water and electricity, and that being pushed onto regular customers. Like the one approved for Corpus Christi, TX. That place is in a pretty severe water crisis, so a data center there could actually be pretty bad (at least potentially).

This will get better over time. Companies are already implementing closed-loop systems, which significantly decreases the amount of water used.

What I don't understand though, is why these data centers can't simply build their own power plants (or supplemental power sources). If you're spending literal billions on these things, just throw in an extra 10-50 million or whatever and construct your own power source. That way you don't strain the existing infrastructure with your usage. That seems to be a pretty simple solution (although I'm sure there is something I am missing).

Many do this, and more will continue to do it. However stuff like this takes a long time to plan and develop, so some companies don't want to do it to slow down the project.

Exactly. I can pull up old videos of him because of data centers.

I'm not accessing his personal hard drive to watch old clips of his he has saved.

I don’t care as long as long a I don’t live near one. By near I mean close enough to worry about ground water or the noise so 20-30 miles

Lower forms of AI will bend to its creators programming..When you are talking about AI sentience, you are taling about creating essentially an alien intelligence that may or.may not even consider human constructs of politics, economics, morality ect...as being important or incorporated into its thinking, decisions and goals.

So now there's a bunch of pro-data center propoganda on Tigerdroppings? Jesus Christ, I've now seen everything on this website.

Frankly, this has got to be the only website on the internet that defends data centers.

The funny part is that no one in parish government is smart enough or informed enough to intelligently debate anything the clowns are dreaming up. And they’ve still been unable to pass any sort of ordinances or zoning maps to protect property values of nearby residential areas, despite arguing over it for years now. Lotta clowns these days.

That particular facility isn't scheduled to consume much water...

This is pure ignorance

The optimal solution is to have them far away from all commercial and residential areas. Thinking you can just throw a hyperscale datacenter in the middle of a walmart is pie in the sky thinking.

Is the data center concerns partisan? Which side? I’ve bought quite a bit of utility stocks in the last decade, partly for this reason. I thought data centers would coincide with a push for alternative energy sources but that part certainly appears to be partisan.
