re: Parents of college students - student loans
Posted by Roy Curado on 6/5/26 at 2:07 pm to Tiger Prawn
As someone who regrets their student loans for a master degree... Try hard as hell to not take them out.
IF you must, go through FAFSA and the government before doing private student loans. At least there is a chance they could be discharged through the government... There are also more payback programs and options through the government. Like if you lose a job, death, illness, etc... a government programs and defer or pause in certain circumstances.

What can I expect for a 5 ton replacement in the Baton Rouge area?

I just got done mattress shopping and I can honestly say its pretty overwhelming, especially if you plan to invest in it.
I can recommend Aireloom mattresses. I think the only retailer that is selling them is Mattress Direct. Ronald Reagan had them installed in every room in the White House and they are a reputable brand.

The LSP UAS program is specifically for C-UAS program management and other specialized enforcement programs.
They are not mature enough or allowed to use drones to enforce traffic citations. Drones are used in SWAT operations, special events like super bowl and concerts, and other one off events.

Yes it is. Go research the policy for whichever airline you frequent the most.

Google flights and a ton of time and due diligence.
Remember, the best time to book a flight is when you are certain you will fly. That is because most airlines offer refunds or credits if the price drops from when you book it. If it goes up, well you eat that cost.

re: When is the best time to book a plane ticket?
Posted by Roy Curado on 5/29/26 at 1:41 pm to bleedsgarnet
The best time to book a plane ticket is the second you are certain that you will be going on the trip.
99% of airlines have a refund or credit policy if the ticket decreases in price from when you purchase it. So if the ticket goes down, you can recoop cost later. If the price goes up, then you are stuck eating the "could have been this much lower" guilt for your trip.

HVAC "Growth"
Posted by Roy Curado on 5/28/26 at 7:11 pm
HVAC tech came out to do my yearly clean and told me I had mildew inside my system. He told me so many people have this problem and 7/10 just chose to ignore it. He gave me a price of $18k for a total replacement.
I hate the idea of breathing in this "growth." But I have bad allergies and have not noticed them being bad. I feel like have mildew or mold in my HVAC system would cause some symptoms like smells, allergies, etc... Why do so many people ignore this?

Hyatt just significantly devalued their points. Do not transfer to them. Are you any other loyalist? I would just pay attention to transfer bonuses until October and pull the trigger on one you think has the best value.
re: Smart Thermostat for Home

I have the Ecobee Smart Premium in my current residence. I had the premium Nest in my last house but switch to Ecobee after Nest announced they were discontinuing and stopping support for all models except their newest model.
I do miss the UI and better feel of the Nest. I think the Ecobee is a little difficult to drill down and get used to.
A "C wire" (or common wire) is a dedicated electrical wire used in HVAC systems to provide a continuous, low-voltage (24V) power supply to your thermostat

re: Stolen Checks via USPS
Posted by Roy Curado on 5/21/26 at 7:47 am to Pelican13
Our company was experiencing this and investigated it with US Postal Inspectors.
Mail Carrier's sell their universal locks to gang bangers and people who steal checks for a set fee. They also just steal them from mailboxes and what not to wash them.
It is pretty common theft crime that nobody is doing anything about. The US Postal Inspectors said they would look at implementing fines to mail carriers who "lose" their keys more than once a year.

re: Voters rejected a 1-cent sales tax in 2023 to give Livingston Parish teachers a raise

With respect, I do not think you truly understood the amendment.
LPPS receives around $800k from the trust funds that would have been dissolved. LPPS pays about $8 million towards the TRSL debt each year. They would have lost the $800k from the funds but freed up $8 million in the books at the same time. The $8 million must have been used for teacher pay raises. Members of LPPS also said they received written assurances that the legislature would have replaced that $800k in funding from another non-dedicated education fund.
This was a no-brainer, fiscally conservative yes for me. Any chance to pay off debt at high interest is a win.

I agree.
I do have dissent towards the central office not prioritizing teachers pay. However, I do fault the general population because a tax was proposed and voted down and another way to fund teacher raises without raising taxes was voted down as well.

Here is the most recent pay schedule that show what admins/principals at the school make. For some reason, they left their pay scale off the last few years... but it doesnt really matter because we know they have not increased this since then.

The first index that breaks $100k is the 1.61 and thats being a high school principal for 25+ years.

Maybe when looking at that W2, your wife should ask why Livingston parish has been able to allocate about 25million dollars to building new sports facilities in the last few years?
People in the City of Denham Springs passed a tax to fund this.

Why every school has at least 4 assistant principals, all making 6 figures a year, while rank and file teachers are making half that?
Admins at schools are not making 6 figures. Check their pay schedule for confirmation if you don't believe me.

Why the LPPS central office needs 200 employees with most of the higher ranks all related to the same 3 or 4 last names and all making over 6 figures?
They have over 2,000 teachers and support staff. I understand the central office needs people in their maintenance and IT program to ensure continuity of basic business services.
The Superintendent makes about $220,000, which I am okay with because that is a worthy salary for someone managing 2,000+ employees and entire school system.
