Man, if only there was some way we could have predicted this

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s successful push to hike the minimum wage for many of the state’s fast food workers is having a devastating impact on businesses, who have been forced to cut labor costs to survive, critics say.

Prices at major brands like Chipotle, McDonald’s and other fast food giants have increased in a move to keep up with the $20 per hour workers have been paid since the new wage went into effect on April 1. The rule impacts restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

The California Business and Industrial Alliance (CABIA) said nearly 10,000 jobs have been cut across fast food restaurants since Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 1287 into law last year.

To highlight what it says are the unintended consequences of the law, CABIA has taken out an ad in Thursdsay’s statewide edition of USA Today with mock “obituaries” of popular fast food brands.

It highlights multiple restaurants that have had to raise prices and lay off workers to stay afloat and, in some cases, shut down stores. The ad features news clips documenting changes made by brands like El Pollo Loco, Subway and Burger King across the state.

its almost as if creating a false price floor has consequences in a free market system...

It’s an intended consequence. More people dependent completely on welfare so they can drum up the next revenue crises to raise taxes.

It's so dumb.

Only places like In N Out, Shake Shack, and Canes can withstand this - it crushes less successful chains like Arby's, Subway, and Rubios

Maybe unintended, but far from a surprise.

Weird how the hike in minimum wage is supposedly related to the hike in the cost of fast food, but the prices keep rising and the jobs keep disappearing.

Aren’t you in favor of $25 minimum wage?

But why exempt restaurants that make and sell their own bread?

Last week, Bloomberg News reported that Newsom had pushed for such a carve-out to benefit donor Greg Flynn, whose company owns and operates 24 Panera Bread restaurants in California.

I would challenge you to comb through my post history and find one post where I said anything even close to this.

My question is why only $20, way not $220?

I can only believe this was the intended result.

As much as we like to say they are stupid, they aren’t stupid.

At least not THIS stupid.

I was listening to an interview with a CEO of a national fast food restaurant chain. He said the restaurants they have increased automation in have picked 7 full points of margin. He said they are now going to do it to all of their restaurants.

I’d be fine with this if people on welfare couldn’t vote.

In Seattle, they passed mandatory cost levels for Uber and gig courier services like Uber Eats. Taking a relatively short Uber ride in downtown Seattle costs more than a long airport Uber ride in a major city in Texas. Ordering Uber Eats for lunch in Seattle is prohibitively expensive. Now, the people who rely on these services to earn a living are freaking out. They are barely working.

We are seeing irrational government over-reach in so any areas that I have lost count.
