You have options now to purchase "ethically raised" animals, and if this is an important thing to you, please do so.
I do. And I can tell you that the number of farms providing humanely raised meat has risen substantially in the last 10-15 years.
I'm not saying I'm in favor of legislating it, just saying that farms will adapt as California is a huge market.
And this is anything but PETA-esque. PETA, HSUS, etc are crackpots who think we shouldn't even have pets much less working animals or livestock.

“Killing Hogs”
If done enough, I think society would be much better off.

What about wild hogs? Doesn’t get much more organic then that. Seems like some southern baws can corner the entire California pork market.

Restaurants should just bring the pigs/ pork in from Mexico illegally. I’m certain their government won’t have a problem with that.

Anything that is bad for California makes Californians move to other states and drive up real estate and housing prices.

is it we've seen too many cute pig videos on the tik tok that we decided they need more space
If you make their pen larger, they'll still bunch up around the trough. All they do is eat, sleep, and then fight for a spot to eat again. I've never seen them sleeping if food is available.
I speak as an expert. One spring, I laid out of school and worked for a NELA man who was named Louisiana Hog Farmer of the Year multiple times.

Sorry, "PETA-tax" had a nice ring to it. I sincerely applaud your commitment to your principles where it counts most - your pocketbook.
I hope you can appreciate that for many people, the price difference between "ethical" bacon and the regular kind will be more than they can afford. And no, they don't have a 'right' to eat bacon, but damn, a BLT sure is tasty.
I find it puzzling that California - where "diverse" behavior is so widespread - chooses the welfare of farm animals as the moral hill upon which it chooses a fight. I'll say no more as I'm treading on PoliBoard territory.

From what I read it was only the Mama's that they were lobbying for bigger pens.
There should be some loosening of the rules on the logistics. Local grocery store should be able to sell products from a local farm/slaughterhouse. But there is a lot of red tape to get into being a "certified" shop. You'll see local at restaurants and farmer's markets other wise you have to go straight to the source. That's not the way in other countries.

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.
frick California. You get what you vote for.

The compliant farms will take in huge profits due to decreased supply
The higher end spots will still get plenty of bacon. They will just pass the cost on to the customer

We'll happily export as many feral hogs from Texas as we can round up and ship out there, for a fee of course.
These animals are an ungodly nuisance here, but they're good eating. And they multiply in biblical proportions. They can supply Californians with good clean bacon for the next 100 years.

The poors will just steal it and smuggle it out between their chonky butts.
How do their bottom regions get so disproportionately massive?

1) California can suffer, fricks given
2) You get what you vote for
3) Don’t California my Texas when you move here because you realize how dumb your state is.

You sure do love your horrible factory farming.
God forbid we treat our animal food sources humanely.
