Thanks to a reworked menu and long hours, Jeannie Kim managed to keep her San Francisco restaurant alive during the coronavirus pandemic.

That makes it all the more frustrating that she fears her breakfast-focused diner could be ruined within months by new rules that could make one of her top menu items — bacon — hard to get in California.

quote:

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

quote:

With little time left to build new facilities, inseminate sows and process the offspring by January, it’s hard to see how the pork industry can adequately supply California, which consumes roughly 15% of all pork produced in the country.

quote:

California’s restaurants and groceries use about 255 million pounds of pork a month, but its farms produce only 45 million pounds, according to Rabobank, a global food and agriculture financial services company.

So pig farms in other states have to decide if they want to incur more expenses to keep Cali residents as a customer or stay as they are now and just supply the other 49 states.

Tough fricking choice IMHO.

Cali’s rules will cause huge headaches and mean lower profits for anyone attempting to enter that market.

OTOH, I bet demand remains high in the other 49 states without having to do this crap.

Same idiots who do benefit songs like “Raise your hands, raise your voice, give the chickens another choice” to push free-range chickens.

What about killing wild hogs which are running rampant through much of the country? They have plenty of space for breeding and are doing so rapidly

I'll ask again. Why is your news feed or surfing habits always geared to Lib garbage? It has to drive you crazy living one trigger to the next. Who cares what Cali does. Let them wallow like pigs.

I'm happy to pay extra to ensure the cow, pig, chicken whatever on my plate had just "one bad day."

Farms will adapt, and charge more, for pigs raised in conditions that meet CA's new laws.

This is a national AP story

quote:

It has to drive you crazy living one trigger to the next.

Trigger is so overused that it's lost any meaning. Why is sharing anything on a message board for discussion automatically mean anyone is triggered over it?

quote:

Who cares what Cali does.

In that same line of questioning, why do you care so much about what I want to share and discuss here?

Put a vote up to choose between the farmers and their workers in the Central Valley and the Delta Smelt, I bet the minnow wins at least 60-40 if not by a bigger margin.

As long as this doesn’t go into force before the UCLA game.

The problem comes when stupid Cali bullshite impacts the rest of the country.

If a court really felt like it, they could use the “commerce clause” to stop Cali from enforcing such a measure because it has such a large impact outside of the state’s borders.
