My wife has a sister and my mother-in-law wants to go to breakfast, hang out, go to brunch, hang out some more and then go shopping, then grab an early dinner ….literally want to spend the entire day with my wife and her sister.

We have three kids and my wife’s sister has four, they literally had to talk to my MIL and explain that we are all in our 40’s and we have families of our own, and their mom had a fricking meltdown that they are being selfish.

Maybe she’s coming to terms with her eminent mortality, and she only has a certain number of years left with them?

Yes, “dear Facebook”… i know

You sound lucky. A lot of wives would have ditched you with the kids to spend the day with mom.

It's almost 11am here... I have yet to interact with my mom or MIL, my son's awake and musta forgot it's Mother's Day and I don't know what my adult daughter is up to- probably being spoiled rotten by her own two kids and husband.

It's peaceful.

Pretty standard projection for people who lean narcissistic. Unless you give them exactly what they want, exactly when they want, every single time they want, you are the “selfish” one. Takes a while for people to overcome the guilt, but once you wrap your head around the fact that there is truly no pleasing them, it gets progressively easier to set boundaries.

Spend next year with the other MIL and she'll get the hint.

It’s your wife’s job to handle that and not you. Let her do it. If your wife tolerates it and you don’t like it? Then your issue is with your wife not your mother in law.

As someone with ample experience in the area, that tends to get complicated if the rest of the family kowtow’s to the victim-playing narcissist. The process sucks and takes literal years.

My wife absolutely does not tolerate it, she’s the one who had to tell my MIL that she was crazy for expecting to spend the entire day over there

My kids took me to lunch last week bc one is working today and the other had a rare opportunity to take a quick trip with her husband and their friends bc he finally had weekend off. I said go have fun. I will go visit my mom next Saturday (a little road trip) bc the bad weather yesterday kept me home. Personally, I despise “days” as it seems commercialized. I enjoy time with my kids and mom anytime so don’t get upset about this stuff.

That said, Happy Mothers Day to moms on the board!

We live in a different state from my MIL, but we called her a little while ago. I wish my mom were still here to be that demanding of my time.

Used to but she’s dead now and the world is a better place.
