I'm actually reading to check on Starbucks and their new CEO may have fixed some of it by moving away from online/mobile orders, funny enough. Curious to see where this goes.

I hope so. They deserve it. Burnt, overpriced coffee and microwaved food. The specialty coffees they make are filled with sugar and are fattening people up too.

But anecdotally I pass 3 Starbucks on my way to work and they have lines around the building every weekday morning. I think they inexplicably do well on grocery store sales too with k-cups, etc.

ETA:

My theory is they over roast their beans to make a much stronger flavor so all of the diluted coffee drinks they make still have some coffee flavor. But if you get it black like I do, it's so bad.

Starbucks competition is local coffee popping up everywhere and some new chains like Dutch Bros. Even small towns now have 2-3 local options on average. And it’s all expensive relatively. People aren’t passing up Starbucks for gas station coffee.

How about do away with the policy/theory of putting stores near interstates?

Nobody wants to stop and eat for an hour in the middle of a roadtrip anymore. People want to get from A to B as quickly as possible.

I’ve always liked the CB in our area but I’m not driving 25-35 minutes to get to it.

If it was within 10 or so minutes from work and downtown, I would probably go a couple times per month for lunch. Heck my wife would probably go every week. She loves that’s shite.

Jennings is the perfect distance for a stop between Houston and Baton rouge

I got my wife to switch to making better coffee at home. It used to be our coffeemate drip machine or starbucks.

Now I get good beans, use a burr grinder, and either a french press or pour over. Making really good coffee at home has ended her Starbucks patronage.

In fairness, they had some initial success because Russia was caught off guard by the total lack of preparations by Germany for such an offensive.

And?

She was hired to fix it, and failed.

Saying she "did the right thing" is a ridiculous cope. There have been plenty of restaurant turnarounds. Chili's is undergoing a major resurgence right now. Other brands have done the same.

Her ideas were dumb and didn't work.

Attempting to rebrand the restaurants to the 2018 middle aged white woman aesthetic is what ruined her.

Somehow that got labeled as "woke".

Its a dying brand. Their customer based is slowly dying. It needs to attract younger customers.

They probably should go even heavier on the nostalgia. Millennials are obsessed with reliving their childhood.

He said that with "attempting to overhaul."

After doing the right thing attempting to overhaul...

Also, funny enough, it seems that she was trying to make cracker barrel a direct competitor with Chili's likely to have the same flexibility they had when they did their overhaul

perhaps. But for the same reason as the others: Shitty product(s). Their coffee is horrible. And overpriced. But they could sell overpriced coffee if it wasn't horrible. Angelinos Coffees is having success doing just this.

As was stated earlier, improving the quality of your product goes a lot further with building/rebuilding success than a design makeover or adopting a more contemporary (AKA "woke") corporate philosophy.

Just offer good food (or coffee) and decent service and most customers will be happy.

My wife still insists on stopping in for the nostalgia purposes, lost both parents over the past 5 years and the drove all over the US.

She keeps repeating the "well, the bathrooms are so clean" because her mom always said that. I try to explain that if we're going to stop for clean bathrooms, can we just do CFA. He'll Walmart's have cleaner bathrooms than CB.

The rebranding this CEO pushed for was going to cost $700m too.

Over 650 locations this is not out of line. I've done this several times and it can always be expected with a new regime

quote:

Are you the CEO that we're discussing because that's exactly the mistake she made? 1st rule in business is know your market. Cracker Barrel appealed to two segments. 50 and up and families travelling or on vacation. Hipsters and the LGBTQXYZ crowd never ate there and never will.

18-35 is more than those two groups. I agree that you shouldn't support groups like that as the alienate others. My point was that the 18-35 demo is where you want to foster roots for those later in life that appreciate the Sunday breakfast with the family. Wait too long and they are endeared to another brand or local establishment.

explained why customers connected the dots

They connected the dots they wanted to connect was my point. You see it very often over on the Poli board here

Along with doing what's realistic fixing the food, I would also do this. The idea of Cracker Barrel is a good and proven one. They just need to adapt that nostalgia to the next aging generation (Millennials).

But, I look around at how much of our economy is coffee shops and I have a difficult time comprehending it. How many Starbucks, Tim Horton's, Dunkin's, and local places can you have (not to mention gas stations and 7/11)?

Yeah, politics is half the reason Starbucks is declining, but the other half is the explosion of rivals. Starbucks is no longer unique, and Ellianos and Scooters has all the sugary girl drinks without the political lectures.

all fine and dandy, but don't alienate your ONLY customers in an effort to attract new ones.

because it was. Some can try to rewrite history or define it in terms less humiliating, but it was correctly defined for what it was.

I'll stand by my earlier point: Some of it was certainly DEI type stuff. The remodels are typical of many chains right now. Decluttering and millennial grey isn't a new concept

I'm a Cracker Barrel loyalist and grew up always stopping there on road trips. It's hit or miss if the service has gone down based on the location, but I think one of its largest issues that no one has mentioned yet is the rise of Buc-ees.

There's a lot of overlap in the demo who frequents both, especially the road trip family.

Buc-ees kind of used some of the Cracker Barrel model in terms of the gift shop/quick place to stop/eat concept, but you can also get gas too.
