Poorly represented graph. All of the blacks were already being held in captivity as slaves yet the graph doesn’t indicate that. They all become free and then start getting arrested and being part of the statistical graph. Of course it jumps dramatically.

I have a good idea why this thread was created, but my guess is with the folks who say drugs.
This is a problem with all races and many age groups.
I've noticed my neighbors drugged up kid is back home from jail, they are good people, the kid is lost.White folks btw.

True, but it's either a coincidence that this tweet was trending recently or this tweet inspired this thread.
Not really the war on drugs being connected to overpopulated prisons has been stated for a very long time now both on the right and left

I didn't say that the only factor is ease of being poor, but I disagree that being poor in America is harder than anywhere on earth.
You can explain away the vast majority of the world simply by the fact that being poor is a daily struggle for survival.
Adding in the zealous need to criminalize everything, especially substance use and possession, with the formalized nature of police and the judiciary thanks to our general love of big government, and you start chipping away at the rest.

Incarcerations went up - crime rate went down over 30 yrs?
Wasn’t that the whole point of incarcerating criminals? Get the thugs behind bars so that crime would go down?

I completely agree with you about "tough on crime" and "law and order" politicians on both sides of the aisle continually one upping each other to criminalize and punish (which seldom has the promised effect).
Add the billions of tax dollars being emptied into both public and private pockets to the mix and "reforms" merely shift who is getting paid.
The War on Drugs is the behemoth with all it's crony-capitalism, erosion of civil liberties etc but there are many others.
I just wouldn't include any programs that aid the poor since pretty much every first world country has a lot more of those than we do without anywhere near our incarceration rates.

Well yea this makes sense if you completely ignore the facts that a thriving black market for drugs creates a shitton more crime beyond just the illegality of the products being sold.

I'm not blaming programs. I'm saying poor people who aren't really that poor and don't have to focus all their energy on staying alive, coupled with the fact that those poor people are comingled with middle and upper class people, will have more motive, opportunity, and means to commit crimes.

While it’s true that drug charges account for a relatively small portion of the total prison population, they account for a much larger share of prison admissions. In fact a Brookings analysis found that in each year from 1993 through 2009, more people were admitted to prison for drug charges than violent crimes.
The difference in total prison population at a given time is obviously due to longer sentences for violent crimes. But something I haven’t seen anyone analyze in detail: with recidivism rates of 40-50%, how many of those violent offenders were introduced to the criminal justice system because of drug charges?
(Recidivism is an entirely different conversation in itself - life is hard for a convicted felon in this country, but rehabilitation is easier said than done.)
I guess my point is that, while length of sentences are certainly a huge factor in our incarceration rate compared to other countries, I wouldn’t discount the war on drugs entirely. It could take many years to see how decriminalization affects overall incarceration rates because of recidivism.

We have a lot of laws. A major contributor to why we have an issue with heavy handed police. The more laws we have, the more aggressive the police force. The criminal justice system figured out a long time ago that arresting people and sentencing them to prison makes money.
Posted on 6/16/20 at 8:08 pm to Joshjrn
It’s because we catch more criminals thanks to the police. WE NEED MORE OF THEM!
