It's (mostly) beyond contestation (ignoring distractions like whether we know for sure what North Korea's incarceration rate is) that the United States has not only the largest prison population, but also the highest incarceration rate per capita in the world. And if you are dead set on quibbling about whether we are the absolute highest, we are certainly within the top handful.

With people on both sides thinking that the other side is idiotic, insane, or both when they present solutions to fix the issue, I was wondering what people believe the cause of the issue is in the first place.

Do we have more laws than everyone else? Do we have the highest percentage of people who are simply criminal to their core? Are our police simply that much more effective/efficient than everyone else's? Some other reason entirely?

Flat Earth pays off.

Criminals can run but when they get to California, Oregon, & Washington State, the cops catch 'em there.

Pretty simple. Locking people up makes the Big Bucks.
Additionally, we put people in jail for stuff that they should probably go to rehab for. And other countries execute serious criminals while we keep them alive with tax dollars. 2 big reasons right there.

The War on Drugs. Thanks, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton--thanks Republicans AND Democrats--for foisting on us one of the world's great policy failures.

China simply kills offenders.

Also: When you know your family is responsible for sending bribes and food in order for you to eat in prison, you tend to rethink criminal acts.

What are majority of the arrests for? I know people say the war on drugs, but most people aren’t sitting at home doing drugs peacefully and minding their own business. They’re robbing, murdering, raping, and committing other crimes while on drugs or to get money to buy drugs.

With all the shite going on and the discussions about policing, how has this simple solution not been brought up?

One thing that I find baffling about the war on drugs is that it seems like one of the few issues that the average American on either side of the political fence can agree on. I don't know if it is the prison lobby, prescription drug lobby, or something else that is keeping it going. It just seems like the pros far outweigh the cons of ending the war on drugs.
