People committing crimes would be the first thing that comes to mind...
Don't commit a crime and you don't find yourself incarcerated. Seems quite simple to me.

that could easily be a symptom of a system with too many laws
especially when those laws aren't applied evenly and are often applied due to OTHER criminal trends (not acts) and their geography

A big chunk of all those property and violent crimes are drug-related and thus consequences of the War on Drugs.

If we ended these two things our prison population would be reduced greatly which would allow us more money to spend on rehab centers for addicts instead of jailing them and never solving the problem

3rd world countries have crappy justice systems. So they don’t lock a lot of people up. Most first world countries have good justice systems, effective policing, but a more civilized population, so they don’t have to lock up a lot of people.
The U.S. has effective police and justice systems, but a much larger criminal element than other first-world countries.
Just as an example, compare homicides between cities in various first-world nations and then compare it to the U.S.
Homicides in 2017:
London: 116
Berlin: 91
Madrid: 39
Rome: 21
Amsterdam: 19
Chicago: 762.
Chicago shooting victims: 3,457
First world justice, large 3rd world population.
That’s at least part of it.

As much as this is true it's also the reverse inside the courts. The system from start to finish is just stupid.

Everytime a question like this gets raised the answer is always big government. All of the US problems begin around the same time.
Why is healthcare inflation high?
Why do we spend more on education and get nothing for it?
Why is economic mobility going down?
What's with the rise in income and wealth disparities?
Same answer every single time and the beginning of these problems all started at the same time. Of course the solution has always been the same for decades too lol

Really close. The actual cause is freedom + stupid people. Stupid people can’t handle freedom. Drugs are not the cause. People deciding to break the law...that is the reason.
I will say that i believe we have entirely too many laws. Maybe too soft punishments are part of it. More severe punishments would cause more people to make better decisions. And people that commit a crime, and receive a soft punishment, they tend to not be afraid to make the same bad decisions....and go back to prison.

Agree about War on Drugs but it's a lot easier to be "poor" in Europe (due to the vast amount of social net programs / universal health care in comparison to the US) and I'm not sure any country there has anywhere near the incarceration rate we do.
