(Gray News) - A 12-year-old girl died after drinking a Twix milkshake, according to multiple reports. On Thursday, Oct. 8, an investigation into the death of Mia Shay St Hilaire at Inner South London Coroner’s Court concluded that she suffered a severe allergic reaction after drinking a milkshake at the Pop Inn Cafe in London, the BBC reported.
She visited the cafe with her aunt and sister in London in August 2023. An investigation into the death of Mia Shay St Hilaire at Inner South London Coroner’s Court concluded that she suffered a severe allergic reaction.
CCTV evidence captured the moment cafe operator Baris Yucel made the drink in a blender that hadn’t been washed after its previous use. She said Mia, who had a hazelnut allergy, had consumed some of a Twix milkshake “which had been cross-contaminated with hazelnut residue from a Kinder Bueno milkshake previously prepared in the same unwashed blender. She developed rapidly progressing anaphylaxis and later collapsed at her aunt’s home.

Too little, too late. Even grand diabetic indulgences won't save that country at this point.

Yeah. If they were aware of her severe allergy and weren’t more cautious that’s on them. You can’t count on the whole world to look out for you.

That’s extremely sad, but why the frick would you bring your daughter to a sweets shop if you know she’s allergic to hazelnut and then not say anything???
ETA: Literally every milkshake shop has some sort of Nutella drink offered now. If you’re allergic to hazelnuts, Nutella is the thing you’d run into the most and desperately avoid. Parents should have known how popular hazelnut stuff has gotten in the last decade, including Kinder Buenos.

Why did you post this here? Thousands of people die of allergic reactions every year. What is supposed to be interesting about this?

If I have severe allergies to food that can cause an anaphylactic reaction I’m not eating anything but from my own kitchen.

My wife has food allergies. We don’t eat out because of cross contamination.

My son has a severe shellfish allergy, and he has a cinch sack with his EpiPen that he takes whenever he goes somewhere that has food.

EpiPen
NHS provides them for free, and they can be bought privately. South London, and no medic could make it within a few minutes? Pathetic. This kid not having at least one auto injector on them is even more pathetic.
Nutella has been super popular in Europe for decades, and there is hazelnut syrup at every coffee place, where a worker may easily cross contaminate drinks, etc.
quote:
NHS Prescriptions: In England, an EpiPen costs the standard single NHS prescription charge per item (or is free if you hold an exemption). In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, NHS prescriptions are completely free for residents.
Private Prescriptions: If obtained through a private clinic or pharmacy, devices typically cost between £40 and £60 each.
The Two-Device Rule: The MHRA strongly advises that individuals at risk of anaphylaxis carry two adrenaline auto-injectors with them at all times.
