Except you had to listen to Geddy Lee's vocals, which makes it mysterious again

Also, the vast majority of the rock audience doesn't care about technical virtuosity, only the overall sound

I cant understand hearing a RHCP song and thinking.. "turn that up!

As a rule, I agree. The lone exception for me is"My Friends". I sometimes hate myself for liking that song.

I can appreciate early RHCP even if it really isn't my thing. But after Blood Sugar Sex Magic they didn't put out anything other than horribly shitty ballads. Anthony Kiedis' voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me when he actually tries to sing.

It's really not. Does he stretch it some? Sure. Listen to the vocals in this song. I don't even like this one, but there's zero wrong with it.

I absolutely despise him -- but I understand why he was popular

Ironically, considering his wimpy music, according to classmate Bill O'Reilly BJ was a juvenile delinquent semi-criminal punk in HS

Regardless of if you enjoy Grateful Dead, it very easy to understand their popularity given how they became successful

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. I will never understand how they are so adored. I do not get i

Really? I totally get it. They’re a really good band of talented musicians who put on great live shows.

I’m not personally a fan. I’ve never owned a Springsteen album nor been to one of his shows. But I’ve heard enough to know that they’re really good at what they do, it’s just not my taste. I’ve heard some things, though, that I really liked. I just don’t know if I could watch a whole show without getting distracted and just wanting to go hang out in the bar or something. But I totally understand why they’re popular.

What I don’t get are the people who don’t get that. Like they’re personally put upon by the fact that some people really like this band that they themselves don’t care for. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like what they do but you should at least respect the fact that they’re really good at what they do. They deliver for their fans and I respect that.

The Grateful Dead. That smart-arse kinda country, kinda folk, kinda self-indulgent yack had to have lots of drugs involved to get a following.

Oh, get Majordomo Billy Bojangles here.

You’re putting the cart before the horse. The drugs came first. Their music was created to be listened to while in a psychedelic state. (The country influence came a little later on.) It’s not that you needed to be on drugs to enjoy their music. It’s that if you never listened to their music while in a psychedelic state then you weren’t getting the full experience. Dropping acid and going to a Dead show could be transformational.

And how popular were they, really? They didn’t have much more than a cult following for most of their career. It wasn’t until they had their first big hit with Touch of Grey in ‘87 that they got really big and could sell out stadiums on their own. That was after they’d been around, mostly flying under the radar, for 22 years. Not getting rich, but getting by.
