With Halloween approaching, what are some good horror movies I should watch? I always watch the "classics" - Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc. I'm not into Saw or Hostel movies - more like the "classics" just mentioned or demonic/possession movies like The Omen, The Exorcist, The Conjuring, etc.

Black Christmas (the 70's) is a "classic" with the classic horror feel.

Insidious is a newer one with kind of a classic horror feel, and involves demonic possession. Lots of pretty scary scenes in it.

The Thing is one of the greatest horror movies of all time, but falls more into alien possession.

The Ring is the scariest movie of the 21st century, IMO.

Watched one on Netflix the other night called Incantation. It's a Chinese found footage movie. It was like 2:30 in the morning and I could not get past the first 15 minutes. I think I'll have to watch it drunk so I don't get scared shitless again

As always, I will ask how weird/twisted you want to get. Not necessarily gory, but some people want vanilla 00s stuff and some people want horror.

Cannot recommend more. It’s a true horror masterpiece, however I think it works better to watch during the Christmas season as it is very much a Christmas movie.

Dead Alive - dir. Peter Jackson. Goriest movie ever made, but also one of the funniest horror movies ever made.

The Funhouse - dir. Tobe Hooper. Absolute classic 80s slasher. If you have ever been to a seedy traveling carnival, this movie hits the sweet spot. Both a tribute to the universal monsters while being an 80s slasher.

Ginger Snaps - for my money the best werewolf movie since An American Werewolf in London. Is dripping with a late 90s aesthetic. The 2 main leads are great. Perfect coming of age high school movie with a werewolf spin.

WNUF Halloween Special - a found footage movie in the style of a lost VHS tape of a local tv channel WNUF doing a live investigation of a haunted house on Halloween night. Filled with fake commercials and news broadcasts. It definitely makes you feel like you are watching a long lost VHS tape.

Prince of Darkness - dir. John Carpenter. Such a damn creepy and unsettling film. A college professor, students, and a priest investigate the weird goings on in the basement of a local church. Little do they know an ancient evil has been contained for centuries, and it is about to be unleashed. It’s John Carpenter & Donald Pleasance, you can’t go wrong.

Jacob's Ladder 1990 is a classic psychological horror/....not the horrible 2019 remake.

Hereditary probably my favorite of the modern demonic possession movies.

It Follows

The Shining and its sequel Dr. Sleep

Nicholas Cage double feature: Mandy and Color out of Space

This is my post that I usually post in these threads:

This is asked often around here. This was one of my responses several years ago with some solid recs and a solid list of threads with recs.

I'll echo some of the ones mentioned here.

As Above, So Below was surprisingly great to me. Pretty cool concept that I feel like they pulled off really well. It's really, really creepy and well done.

Babadook wasn't too great IMO, but it was decent (I just didn't like the ending).

Cabin in the Woods was great, especially if you like meta with your horror. It's fantastic (both as satire and a legit horror movie).

The Houses October Built was decent, but the ending was sort of weird and confusing.

Agree that the first Paranormal Activity was solid. It would've been one of the best horror movies I had ever seen had the trailer not completely ruined the ending. I was super pissed about that.

I've heard good things about It Follows, but I didn't like it near as much as most people on this board. It was just decent, and pretty overrated IMO.

If you like weird, sort of fricked up ones, Megan is Missing is not too bad (but it's pretty twisted though). May not be straight up horror though.

I thought Black Death was pretty solid. Plus, Sean Bean is in it, and he's awesome.

Zombeavers was mentioned, and while it's obviously stupid as frick, it's a fun watch.

House of the Devil is a good, slow-burn horror/thriller, and a throwback to old school horror movies.

Very much agree. This and The Descent both fall into this category to me. Both had some really good creepy moments.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. For being a B level movie, it was surprisingly solid. Had some very creepy moments and overall did well.

The 1999 remake of House on Haunted Hill was a shockingly good one. Both creepy and kind of funny, too.

You should take a look at r/horror's movie guide. It's pretty comprehensive and it'll help narrow down the suggestions based on genres in which you're interested: Dreadit's Movie Guide

I'll add some horror movies that add an element of "fun", if you want to somewhat lighten the mood:

Cabin in the Woods
Devil
The Visit (just watched it for the 1st time last week and enjoyed the hell out of it.)
Get Out

...along with the franchises of Evil Dead, Scream, Chucky, Nightmare on Elmstreet, and Final Destination. (Too many funny, action, zombie movies to list)

Then there are flat-out comedies with horror themes like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland that are must-see, at some point.

Those lists are compiled based on votes from the r/horror community.

Bad Moon had the same amount of votes as The Wolf of Snow Hollow. So not sure why TWoSH made the list and Bad Moon didn't.
