What you got? I used to hate scary movies when I was a kid, but I've liked them for a long time now. But I find (as is often pointed out here) that "scary" movies these days pretty much suck arse. And your suggestions don't necessarily have to be recent movies (I expect some Alien/Exorcist/Shining-type responses, as they are classics).

And it doesn't have to specifically be a "horror" movie, but just good scary/thriller-type movies. Also, try to go about this in a non-movie-snob kinda way. I don't care about technical shite...I just want decent/good scary movies.

Also, try to limit the spoilers.

Here are a few fairly recent movies that I like and I think are decent:

- The Strangers - actually a thread about it below. I think it's a legitimately creepy movie.

- The Descent - decent movie, but the setting (underground caves) make for a pretty creepy (and uncomfortable) feel.

- The Hills Have Eyes (remake) - watched this again last night, and it was still much better than I had originally expected it to be.

The Ring actually freaked me out. One Missed Call had to be one of the worst fims I've seen in a long time (just turrible).

These were the 2 I was going to say, but...

And completely ruined by their trailers. I think everybody that walked into that movie already had an idea how it was going to end. Especially by the time they lock themselves in that dark room.

The Hills Have Eyes

didnt do much for me personally.

my brother called me after watching Hostile and said it kept him up that night. i don't understand the hype with those type of movies. i did not find it scary at all.

The Ring

was creepy but i thought the grudge was better, imo. even though i will probably get bashed for saying that.

i am looking forward to seeing The Unborn.

definately.

but the scene where the chick is running down the stairs and just gets through the door and looks back to see the face staring at her was creepy.

The Orphanage. It's more eerie than scary but still good.

I assume you mean Hostel.

I thought it was pretty good. But it was basically just a gross-out movie.

I own this one (and have heard it's good), but have to wait for a day when I feel like reading subtitles the whole time...

Watch it in a double-feature with The Devil's Backbone. Two great Spanish ghost stories.

The Ring was the last real scary movie that I was impressed with.

The first Resident Evil was good, the subsequent ones have sucked.

I haven't seen any of the Saws or Hostels. I tried to watch House of Wax and the Hills Have Eyes and was really not into either of them.

I am Legend was really good, although after the "Fred" scene I thought the movie went downhill.

The Orphanage is probably one of the best written "scarey" movies I have ever seen.

2 thumbs up for the use of plot devices.

One of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen is "Last House on the Left", more because of its realism at the time.

IMO i think that horror movies have fallen off in the past 10 years. The whole asian horror was ok when it first came to the U.S. (the ring) but after that it seemed every horror film was an asian knockoff.
It just doesn't seem like there are any good horror directors anymore. The only one i kind of like is rob zombie, but i think he focuses alot on gore. I want a movie that brings back that fear that everyone shares, like the old horror films, either that or monster movies. Cloverfield was pretty good.

Problem is that these days, horror movie aren't scary because you can watch TV or go in the internet and be scared. Almost every day we see scary things on tv. 9/11 and such. In the theatre we know it's not real, but thousands of people dieing in a plane crash into a building is as real as it gets.
I read about this in a magazine and I'm trying to find a link. But it fully explains that it's hard to scare people these days, as opposed to when we were young and the media didn't show as much images as they do now.
Clowns and Chucky then=Scary. Clowns and Chucky now=funny.
