The Thing 1982

The original Universal horror movies (Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, etc.)

A lot of the Hammer stuff is good. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are great.

Any of the slasher films from the 80's.

Always used to watch The Shining but Trick R' Treat is the perfect Halloween movie because it's actually about Halloween.

Seeing a lot of love for Exorcist III here and in the WTF thread.

What's the appeal here? Those horror sequels are usually utter garbage. I didn't even know this one existed.

Burnt Offerings-- 70's PG rated flick with very made for TV production values. It's derivative of a lot of better horror movies, but I've found not many people know about it. Have no idea how this thing got a PG... not a lot of violence, but my goodness I can't imagine how children would sleep well for a while after watching this. I'd describe it as a Shining primer.

Scream-- yeah it's pure camp and only mildly scary at points, but a classic.

The Omen-- speaks for itself.

Eraserhead-- yikes.

Phantasm-- watch the first one. If you like it continue with the series, though a couple are real duds.

Halloween III--gets a lot of hate b/c it's Halloween without Michael Myers, but if you are a fan of nihilism and shocking (literally) death scenes, you might like this one.

A ton of great suggestions. Just to add a few that I haven't seen listed so far.

The Mist
The VVitch (polarizing film, but I really liked it)
Pet Semetary (80s version)
The Ritual
The Hills Have Eyes

Also not a movie, but if you and your wife haven't seen The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix Series) do yourself a favor and watch it this October.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter - stumbled on this recently and it was great - very creepy with an interesting ending. The first 15 minutes are underwhelming and we almost turned it off - sooo glad we didn’t.

Original Night of the Living Dead

Amazing what you can do with a little imagination and with a budget of around $307.49.

Just a brilliant little piece of work, and its cult status is very well deserved.
