So conventional wisdom says 1 or 2 more just by staying in college football instead of spending time in the NFL.

I would say no, only because his time in the NFL made him a better coach.

Exhibit A on why the offseason is the worst of times.

Bo Rein
This remains a curiosity. Bo Rein had a good record as coach of a second-tier ACC school, but it seems many on this board regard him as a man with mythological powers as coach, who could guarantee championships. There's nothing in his small oeuvre that would suggest that.

Saban probably would have added a couple more
Oh, at least. Saban's resurrection of a moribund program which hit rock-bottom in 1999, to winning an SEC Championship just 2 years later, and a national title in two more years, is the stuff of legends. His turnaround of a lackluster Alabama program after arriving in 2007 is impressive, but not spectacular like what he achieved at LSU.

Saban simply not being the HC of Alabama gets Les 2-3 more NCs….

At least one more obviously. But Les was gonna Les, and he lost several games due to poor clock management and poor decisions late in games. But overall there's a lot good to be said about Les's 11 1/2 year run at LSU.

Well it would've been the same coach, but Louisiana produces more athletes per capita than Alabama. And anything out of state would probably be a wash, ....soooooooo
Maybe

Yes I fully believed he would’ve won a minimum of 6-7 titles here.
Posted on 7/26/26 at 1:04 pm to ezride25
Probably not, because LSU would not have been able to offer him the business opportunities he has in Alabama.
Posted on 7/26/26 at 1:38 pm to ezride25
No because there is not a world that exists where he does not go the NFL before 2010.
He likely leaves after we win the 2006 title.

Nick Saban recruited as well to Alabama as he would have to LSU. I don’t believe his results would have been any different. The only difference would have been him not having to work as hard to recruit the athletes he did.

Every year he won, he would have won at LSU. Think of keeping Louisiana talent and plucking guys like Julio Jones from Bama.

Best situation ironically would have been for him to have mild success in 2006 at Miami and then leaves after 2007. Miles goes to Michigan after winning NC that year and Saban comes back to LSU.
He learns his lessons and comes home to his first championship team as a head coach.

No way.
The Alabama thing was right place, right time.
He could have gone 95% of other places and that wouldn’t have happened. Lightening in a bottle for his style and methods to be matched up with a place like bama.
Yes we probably would of had a shot a couple, but that Bama would be too much to compare with.

I’d think about the same counting 2003 and 3 to 5 in the last 17 years

I wanted that prick Saban gone from LSU.
Every year he wanted a raise and every year he got one.
Every year he flirted with whichever NFL job was open and it was starting to hurt recruiting.
I remember when he signed an extension, got a raise, interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and then lied about it to Skip Bertman all in the course of one week.
I predicted he would fail in the NFL but must admit I never thought he would do it so quickly and end up at Alabama. I thought it would take a couple of more years and he would go to Florida State once Bobby Bowden pulled his pants up to his armpits and started driving around Miami in the right lane with his left turn signal flashing.

He would have won less, LSU rules did not allow players to be paid.

Great take and probably correct.
