Heater smoking on first start up of season
Turned on the heater for the first time this season. Got the usual burning smell but noticed a little bit of smoke come out the vents. Is this a cause for concern or common?

I turned the heater off when I noticed

What kind of system and have you changed the type of filters you are using in the last season?

It's an electric system. Are you referring to the intake filter?

Probably just dust on the electric elements getting smoked.

nothing to be too freaked out over but that sa sign its collecting a lot of dust before its turned on again the first time each year.

look at the return air and try to seal it up better, pay careful attention its not sucking in attic air or from between walls

as for now just do short quick burns a couple times if need be but you just have to let it burn off the dust

Electric, just open windows and burn thru it. You are burning dust. Should clear up after about 5 mins.

This in a nutshell. No matter if gas or electric, some dust will settle on the burners over the summer months and will burn off when first lit in the fall.

May want to change your filters more often if you're seeing smoke though. I just get the slight burn smell every first startup with the first cold snap.
