Metairie Country Club
How is the course there? challenging? wide open? what public course does it compare to in New Orleans?

re: Metairie Country Club
If you like golf course architecture and golf history, you’ll love it. If you’re not into that stuff, you may be underwhelmed. It was designed by Seth Raynor, who designed a bunch of famous courses back in the early 20th century. His knack was using “template” holes based on the great holes of Scotland and England. The Greens and Bunkering there are really good. It’s very lay of the land and old school.

If you don’t love the Punchbowl hole, you should probably give up golf altogether. It’s pretty awesome.

Here a blog about it that I may or may not be the author of:

The Golf Blurb

Thanks! Apparently 2 people don’t think so. One is just a anonymous pussy that downvotes all my GB posts no matter what I say, but doesn’t have the balls to ID himself.

Cool write up. Glad to see there are people out there that appreciate the golden age architecture, even though MCC in its current form isn't wholly representative of Raynor's/Macdonald's ideas. There are talks of a restoration in the near future though; so hopefully it'll become even more representative of that era in a few years.

Did they do a renovation? or it just not in as good as shape as you'd hope?

re: Metairie Country Club
It's not in good shape right now, but that's a different story.

It was renovated back in the early 2000s, and some of the original concepts were lost. I don't know what it was like prior to then, so it could have been even worse.

It's really a shame that course struggles to have consistently good conditions. It's a fun track and one I'd never get tired of playing.

Greens have lived their useful life, so they've had issues with transition and even withstanding extreme weather recently. Drainage has issues too. Fairways are usually ok after rain, but the low lying areas in the rough stay wet for days, sometimes weeks. And the bunkers, especially the faces, need a lot of work.

Are you guys planning on ripping them up soon? I feel the membership has to be getting burnt out on the condition, especially with the course next door always in great shape.

Yes, see my first post in this thread. It's early in the process, but something will happen in the next couple of years.

Correct, people are pretty fed up. But it's not like most of us can just ride over to NOCC and ask to join.

I hear they are interviewing architects right now, but are trying to maintain some of the original designs. Do you have any insight on what renovations they are making?

I get it. I, just as I'm sure you guys do, feel that there's no reason it's not a top 5 course in the state. You still definitely get the Raynor feel out there. Good luck and I'm hoping things get better. MMCCGA

I wonder if they have the coin to bring in somebody like Core Crenshaw or Fazio. I know they've each done a couple Raynor redos.

re: Metairie Country Club
Is the course one that a slice will end up in the next fairway or is it spread out enough?
