My obvious concern is that he ends up fighting in some bullshite war that has nothing to do with preserving our freedom. Just as bad is that I think our military could end up pointing guns at US citizens in our lifetime. Where would the OT start in educating the young lad on the political dynamics of our times so that he could make an informed decision as to whether current causes are worth dying for?
You act like this is some new phenomenon. Why don't you first teach him the history of the last 60 years or so. Maybe start with Vietnam.

Go on Amazon and order movie-Born On the Fourth of July.Gave me cold chills,I was Ron Kovic(played by Tom Cruise),senior in high school all I wanted to do was join the Marines ,go to Viet Nam and kill communists.
Went to Marine Recruiting office but they wouldn’t take me as I was 17 unless my father signed for me.He said hell no on the Marines but he would sign for the Navy.
So I join the Navy, was in Seabees and volunteered twice to go to Viet Nam.For some reason they never called me even though they had asked for volunteers.

The scenes in the V.A hospital was horrific but were common in some V.A hospitals from talking to veterans.

My sister spent her last 5 years working in V A hospitals in Seattle. She said the patients that were the highest priority were veterans wanting sex change operations.Higher priority than combat veterans with war injuries,if you can imagine that shite.

I am from family of 5 generations of veterans counting grandson that is currently a Navy pilot.I always talked up the Navy to my grandsons but not anymore,I tell them to stay far away from it now.In fact I have a 20 year old grandson that was offered $30,000 sign on bonus out of high school to go into Navy nuclear program.
He has a academic scholarship and is majoring in physics so all is good.

I've been in 32 years in the Air Force. His best route is to get into an academy. The next best route is to go ROTC and pick his college. If your son wants to make a difference the officer route is the best option. Do not let him enlist as a non officer that means he must have his college degree. Don't worry about the woke top brass. There are way more non woke officers and enlisted and we don't have to tiptoe around. We just have to take a bunch of classes and listen. As of now there is no way anyone in the enlisted ranks that would turn a gun on U.S. Citizen's. Do not let him join the Guard because they are state run and they can deploy in the US.

Talk him out of it at all costs.

Explain to him why going die in Ukraine or any other place doesn’t mean he died for our freedoms.

It means he is a sucker and a pawn.

I wouldn’t serve this Federal government whatsoever. Tell him to join his states National Guard.

Best advice to give him is to get a job he can use when he gets out of the military. Anything medical or computer related. Forget all the gung ho Infantry or Armored type of jobs. There’s not much real world need for a gun toter.

As long as he realizes it’s not a call of duty game or top gun movie

Count,
First, be very proud. When our kids reach the age that they can make their own decisions and are choosing to serve this great nation, of their own volition, is very impressive. Well done to you and Mrs Count. I mean this in the most sincere manner.
I talk about this with kids and parents routinely. Not a recruiter but am part of MC recruiting apparatus and am very familiar MC and other service recruiting.
If a HS kid can get into any of the Service academies, by all means go. If not, pursue ROTC (MCROTC early boards actually meeting now) if he is academically strong and likes school. Primary ROTC boards meet in March.
Most negative news written about military in the MSM is either exaggerated or patently false.
My perspective is MC, but I am very familiar with national security, OPLANS, and global mil posture for all services including Coasties. Our oath is to the Constitution, a very noble and worthy cause…one for which it is easy to retain clear-eyed focus on defending.

I enlisted out of college in ‘91, has served me very well…Became an officer, still serving.

Lots to unpack in this decision, willing to discuss. I am loyal to and love our Corps, but fully embrace our other services (can’t win a war w/o strong Navy, Army, and AF).

Either way, good luck to little Count.

My 15 yr old son is considering this route b/c he really wants to fly. Not so much fighters…just fly. As a fall back he’s very computer and mechanically savvy. We figure he’ll get the best training in the world and with the AF not running through the desert getting shot at.

I don’t know if he can get in or not…he’s a varsity FB player with size so I’m wondering if that might help too.

USMC vet - two tours in Iraq.

I do not regret it, but do not recommend it. I signed when I was 17 and that decision set the course of the rest of my life, for better or worse. If your son has a brain in his head and has good career options, he should focus on that. I came from an educated family with money. Most of the guys I served with did not. They were there out of necessity. I was there because I was a 17 year old dumbass with delusions of grandeur. Well I found plenty of that and then some. All at a price both physically and mentally.

But that Semper Fi tho...

A buddy of mine is a former scout sniper with multiple tours under his belt. Probably would be someone good for your son to talk to.

Matter of fact, the first headcam in the video is him. You'll his headcam with the jolly rancher in the thumbnail.

If he has a shot of playing sports at one of the military academies then that is the route, he needs to go. Option two would be going to college and participating in ROTC.

I cannot overstate the massive difference in quality of life between officer and young enlisted servicemen. Young officers will live comfortably, where, as young enlisted will have to scrape every dollar.

Just make sure that he chooses a service/specialty that will have some usefulness in the private sector. If he’s very smart, he can attend a school of engineering and then work in the Navy as a nuclear officer on a submarine or carrier. They will then be set for life.

Cruise’s finest performance.. some might say Magnolia, but he didnt carry that movie.. Born on the Fourth wasnt a great movie (it was good) but a little too long IMO and dragged in places.. but his performance in that film was magnificent .

You can get called up to “serve this Federal government” if you’re in the guard.

Not saying guard/reserve can’t be a good deal. It certainly can, just not for that reason.
