HS aged son has expressed interest in joining the military

He sees his options as follows in order of preference: play sports at one of the military academies (which is feasible), go to college first then join, enlist right after high school. I told him that I support him, but that he must understand that joining the military could mean dying at war, which he says he understands. My obvious concern is that he ends up fighting in some bullshite war that has nothing to do with preserving our freedom. Just as bad is that I think our military could end up pointing guns at US citizens in our lifetime. Where would the OT start in educating the young lad on the political dynamics of our times so that he could make an informed decision as to whether current causes are worth dying for?

Have him read Starship Troopers.

Sounds like you have and he gets it.

Ask him if he has confidence in our country’s leaders putting his life in jeopardy for political gains and theatre.

Our youngest truly wants to be a sniper…..preferably seals (of course).
He’s a different breed.
Our push is getting a degree/rotc/officer route, but he is laser focused on service.

Is there a trade he is interested in? He could always join the National Guard...
I have a friend whose son wants to be a diesel mechanic. He joined the NG while still in high school and already goes to his required trainings. They are going to train him to be a diesel mechanic and then pay for him to go to trade school after he graduates.

I've been in almost 25 years, he will get out of the military whatever he puts in. If he's serious about it, get in early and make career decisions, don't coast through the MSO then decide to be serious about it. Lots of opportunity to make a great career either directly or parlayed into a civilian career.

That’s admirable in the young lad.
Even more than understanding he may die for his country. Make sure he understands just as well he could be maimed or have to deal with ptsd and the like. Any sort of combination which would mean he sacrifices every day for the rest of his life.
It sounds like you both have good heads on your shoulders but still don’t leave anything unspoken, make this is one of those deals you’ve gotta talk through any and every scenario.

Coast Guard. Lower ranks have more autonomy and responsibility than any other service. And the most primo duty stations.
Crossing the Columbia River Bar or jumping out of a helicopter into a pitch dark ocean is enough of a testosterone check for the ballsiest baw.

34 and I wouldn’t say I have regrets but really wish I would have enlisted.
My uncle made a 30 year career out of architecture/drafting/design in the Air Force and retired at like 51. Find an actual trade/transferable civilian career instead of kicking down doors in the sandbox would be my best advice.
