Insurance was much cheaper. I hate the process now, but it is all by design... Raise the prices to uncomfortable levels so you will beg for government to take over.

It was a quarter of the cost to me. The benefits were better. The co pays were lower. The deductibles were lower and deductible calculations were more common sense. Less BS at every step. RX didn’t always force you into a generic. And so on.

re: What was health insurance like pre Obama care?
For me it hasn’t changed since Obamacare. At one point before Obama we paid $1600 a month for a healthy family of three. I switched careers because of it and my job paid 100% for all of us. I’ve since then switched jobs and we still pay $1600 per month between us and our employers. Granted we have really good insurance, it’s still a significant chunk out of the pay check.

I'm no health insurance expert, but the Affordable Care Act made it mandatory for all insurance to cover pre-existing conditions thus the increase across the board. Prior to ACA, H. Clinton was responsible for HMO's, managed healthcare, which no one liked and did not result in quality care for the patient. Always opt for choice, over mandated government healthcare.

re: What was health insurance like pre Obama care?
My monthly premium increased, my deductible increased, and my out of pocket maximum increased. My family deductible was $0 and out of pocket maximum was $3,000 per family and $1,000 per employee. Fast forward to after ACA, my family deductible is $1,200 or $400 for employee only. Out of pocket maximum is $8,500 for family and $3,500 for employee only. Pre-ACA I paid about $400 per month and now I pay about $530.

re: What was health insurance like pre Obama care?
Pre-Obamacare...

1) Healthy people had better insurance options that were cheaper (compared to today). Really healthy people who were young could have these mini-plans that were insanely cheap and really only covered major incidents.

2) Unhealthy people struggled to find affordable insurance, unless they worked for a major company.

Pre-Obamacare, individuals and groups were rated on their risk, based on prior claims and medical history. If you had 15 people in your group, and one had a heart attack, it would impact your rates more than if you had one heart attack among 100 people in your group.

Healthy people, today, have more expensive, worse coverage. Unhealthy people, today, have cheaper, better coverage.

So your view on this depends on where you fall.

Personally, mine was comparable other than the cost of the premium which has basically doubled since.

Trump administration announced new rules like a week ago that will require almost all insurers to list their contracted prices with providers for 500 services by 2022 and all services by 2023.

And Biden will receive credit when that goes into effect. 47 years, his first positive accomplishment.

re: What was health insurance like pre Obama care?
I got on my own health insurance in 1995, got married in 1998 and had kids in 1999 and 2000

when I started, health insurance was a backup, if you went to the doctor you paid OOP for whatever doctor you wanted and the costs were affordable. you used insurance for big things, not everything.

when the Hillary Clinton plan fully kicked in, HMOs and PPOs took over and the insurance got really complicated, costs started going up

the biggest change was the old doctors started refusing to take health insurance from certain carriers and they started raising their OOP rates to keep up with the market

Bush takes over and the HMOs and PPOs explode, the system becomes even more complicated and the costs start to rise. the concept of using health insurance for everything takes over. the good doctors join the old doctors and start dropping out of the networks and refusing to take certain insurance carriers

obama takes over, rams ACA through and the old doctors, the good doctors are pretty much all OOP, the only doctors in the networks are the new or shitty docs or these corporate medical CO-OPS. everything is sky high and the value is shite

so we have a situation similar to the school system. you pay pre-tax money for a shitty system that you can use at your own peril and you pay after tax money for another system OOP that you want

one final note, I have noticed with medical now, if you go to the doctor in your network it is probably a big practice with lots of doctors, half to most of the docs are very young, asian or indian. it can be difficult to understand them and because the visit is covered by insurance they are more inclined to order every test and run every trap to cover their arse and get “the right answer”
you feel like a biology experiment test subject

we used to go to the doctor and they would be honest with you, they had empathy and treated you like a human. medicine, like most everything else is corporatized to our detriment

If you generally pay your own way it was much better. If you’re a wagon rider Obamacare is awesome. All those working suckers are paying your way.

Our family saw a shift overnight. Our rates stayed the same, they just stopped paying for things they used to pay for and challenged everything you submitted. Our out of pocket costs probably went up 5k a year, easy, and that’s without any major complications.

re: What was health insurance like pre Obama care?
I'm self employed.

I was paying about $120/month for a deductible of $1800/year. No frills.

Obama care passed went up to $180/month. Deductible went up to $5k. Paid it.

Next year up to 360/month for $5k deductible. Switched to a health share. Tried pricing it out the following year and it was $480/month.

Not a fan.

re: What was health insurance like pre Obama care?
Before Ocare, I paid for my own insurance and had great coverage for $135/month. After Ocare, I got the cheapest thing they had and it was over $400/mth and I basically can't go to the Dr without a major emergency or illness because there was a huge deductible before it paid for anything.

Pre Obamacare, my wife and I were paying just over 250 a month, with a 1500 dollar deductible.
