Sure, if by merit you mean Musk, von Braun, etc. Sure, we'll take all the generational geniuses on the planet (assuming they don't secretly want to kill us all). When "merit" starts meaning "has engineering degree from dajeetapopolis and will do engineering job very poorly for $65k a year" is when you totally lose me on this issue.

This is the same argument the boomercons have made since Reagan. The problem is standards for achievement aren’t universal and who migrates never ends with the individual.

There's a lot more merit to our economical needs for a Central American "unskilled" craftsman* than a dubiously trained IT person from India, but our current system tells the Central American to kick rocks while flooding the US job market with the Indians. That's the discussion Vivek doesn't want to have.
*Reform/eliminate out current welfare state and that need goes away, at least a large percentage.

There’s ultimately no difference. One just takes longer to accomplish the same ends. What we see today wouldn’t have been possible without the willingness of the GOP to help facilitate under the guise of meritocracy.

I’m old enough to know that it’s just a matter of time before the GOP in its current iteration moves left to accommodate these policies.
Vivek is a continuation of the appeasement party the GOP has been for the better part of 40 years.

It’s already happening. Just yesterday I saw a video of a “Republican Pastor from Georgia” shaming Christians for not exercising their biblical duty of supporting Muslims and their “modesty” hijabs. Of course that’s a lie, but many fall for it.
