Slater can be a supporting character study and personal story development character.
He is a security officer living in a tin shack in Caracas. He washes, dresses in his uniform to go to work at night. He kisses his beautiful wife and baby goodbye and walks the several miles to his post. He is apolitical, just doing his job to feed his family.
Then suddenly a red dot appears on his forehead and his head is blown off.

You’re right in that drugs are not the primary motive here. That’s window dressing for the social conservatives and they eat it up.
It’s oil, but it’s a bigger picture.
Trump wants to fundamentally remake and influence South America and having a significant foothold and conduit in venezuela is a big part of that objective. From what I’ve read, Rubio was a driving force in this foreign intervention policy.
It’s oil, but it’s also trade, business, investment, capital, government, migration, political influence and control, construction, property development and management, military, etc.
It’s oil, but it’s a bigger picture.

Democrats are pussies, they need more socialists in Congress, but they think The Hague may indict Trump for war crimes because of the bombing of Hugo Chavez’ tomb. If enough countries apply pressure and damage our economy, we’ll have no choice but to turn Trump over to the International Criminal Court.

Sure let’s start going around the world invading lots of countries and kidnapping their leaders.
It’s fascinating to watch so many people flip, like a switch, from “let’s not experiment with regime change and engage in foreign military adventurism” to “frick yeah man ‘murica who we hittin’ next dude!?!?!”

I understand that he is quite unpopular.
That doesn't mean in any way whatsoever that Venezuela will unite in an outpouring of love and peace and flourishing democracy.
It is a violent, fractured, large nation filled with paramilitaries, cartels, gangs, corruption, drugs, and oil.
To completely dismiss the reality of the possibility of civil war, or at least prolonged violent instability, seems foolish.
