The dollar amount of the judgement seems unreasonable. That will be adjudicated on appeal. Trump can't post the required bond. In the meantime, New York will take title to Trump properties to hold as the case goes through the courts. Trump is going to suffer a substantial loss largely due to how much New Yorkers hate his guts.

I would argue the number isn't arbitrary. I'm sure Leticia and the Judge both looked into his liquidity and selected a number north of there on purpose.

I look forward to his recourse when all is said and done. I hope both Leticia James and Egeron rot in hell.

Here, the judgment is 464 mm, so I don't see why the bond requirement is excessive; you generally have to post bond to cover the judgment. The problem, though, and it strikes me as a huge problem for the state, is that the judgment itself is an excessive fine and therefore violative of the 8th Am.

This is correct. They don't know what they're talking about, mixing up civil and criminal.

It does ,but going through the appeals process is time consuming and expensive.

What makes you think it's excessive, or that bail is the same as a bond?

Bail is set by the court, bond is through a private bonding company that pays your bail.

So this is an excessive fine.

I also dont know NY laws on some of this stuff, states may vary on the % you need to put up.

Like FL caps it at a certain amount.

This is just a misconception silly Republicans have. It's all there in Article One of the Extra Constitution:

Quoted forthwith:

Article 1: This is (D)ifferent.

"I'm not sure it's a violation of the 8th amendment but I admittedly haven't looked into it."

I did a quick search on civil penalties and the 8th Amendment, and it looks like it can get pretty involved and that at least in some cases, governmental entities have gotten away with some significant penalties that sure look and feel like an excessive fine. Gorsuch had a dissent in a recent case raising this issue. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and could open a can of worms.

I'm pretty sure the lid to the worms can has been lost forever at this point.

Shouldn't it be based on damages and not net worth?

There were no damages. The loans were repaid in full.

Not only that, new York came out and said publishing we will not be doing this to anyone else, only Trump.

And this was a civil penalty not a criminal one. The entire situation is ridiculous.

Going out on a limb, but I assume it's because he is worth north of $2.6 billion. In his case it wouldn't really be excessive because he can comfortably pay it.

That's bullshite tho bc if that creep judge said MAL is only worth like $18MM there's no way Trump would be worth anything close to $1BN

Are you saying the judgement is based on his wealth and not damages? Is the appeals process just available to those with liquid assets only?

Also, it would be hilarious and unsurprising if the very court that determined his net worth is nowhere near what he claims would order a judgement based on the net worth they determined to be false.

What a shite show.

Why would she inflate his fine knowing his property is inflated?

He's not even worth a billion. He's been lying about his net worth. Other billionaires have been saying he has been lying about his net worth. Ask Jeff Bezos, Carlos Slim, Bill Gates, Mark Cuban; bet if they had to get 450 million they could, but for some reason Trump can't raise the money and all the bond companies refuse to loan him the money. Hmm? Could it be that Trump has a history of not paying his bills (typical hypocrite, wants to lecture of people about paying their bills, like NATO but he never pays his bills). Poor broke MAGA could only raise 1.3 million, according to the Gofundme I checked last time. On Reddit, in r conservative, people are talking about taking out a second mortgage on their home to support Trump. Hmmm. That's not the brightest idea but okay!
