Finland survived almost 50 years of being in the shadow of the USSR without being being consumed by them as a client state. Norway and Turkey had a Soviet border and joined NATO, but neither presented the "threat" to their hegemony that a NATO member Finland would. So, Finland charted a middle ground that kept them nominally independent.
Russia has centuries' worth of invasions and incursions that have formed the paranoia Putin embodies. Is it "fair" that places like Ukraine, Georgia, Finland, and other border countries have to walk on eggshells? Of course not. It is what it is, though.
This is so much like when I argue that Trump cost himself the election by not acting Presidential. I get accused of not understanding what made him "Trump". People can't see the difference between what is possible in the short term and what is smart for the long term.
If you accept that Ukraine is in this mess largely because PotatoBrain kept dangling NATO membership for them, how do you not see the same danger with Finland? Yeah, Russia has stepped in a pile of crap, but don't think that means they won't do it again, and it's the Finns that would pay the price.
