The thing is, the same tired arguments by people that athleticism doesn’t matter in soccer is just cope, mostly by European soccer fans to try to rebut the common argument by Americans that they’d dominate soccer if their best athletes played.
The narcissism entailed in thinking Europeans - you know, people who actually watch the sport - are coping to shut down objectively stupid opinions to feel better about themselves might be the most mentally ill take in this entire thread

Take care all

Well you posted more than your fair share of it.
In fairness, responding to retards is nonsense. I’m a clown for engaging

Did you read what I said at all?
I’ve read way too much nonsense in this thread from those who have no fricking semblance of understanding of a very basic sport. I’m tapped out  Best of luck

See this is just not true.
I don’t need the most disingenuous poster in this board’s history to tell me what is or isn’t true

So you do believe there are athletes with the characteristics that make up a great soccer player that aren't playing soccer
There’s many characteristics that go into being a great soccer player. Some can be held by pure “athletes”. Some can also be missing

This thread is focused on how the focal characteristics of pure athleticism don’t translate to soccer (admittedly a fact that for some reason just isn’t sinking in for far too many)

I believe 100% that Ed Reed would be a much better defender than Tim Ream ever was even with the exact same coaching.

Does Reed have a natural inclination for a sick first touch? Or control with pace?

He’s actually probably one of the worst examples to use for this argument as the things that actually made him a great (IQ, preparation, and vision) aren’t a function of raw athleticism

He wasn’t an INT freak because he used athleticism to beat people to the ball, it’s because he was the best in the history of the game at baiting throws and was phenomenal at reading QBs. He wasn’t an incredible returner because he was fast or a freak athlete, his speed was actually below-average for a safety. The picks he housed were on the back of spatial awareness and IQ. Go back and watch them if you’ve forgotten. You’re not seeing a sick athlete blow by. You’re watching methodical trodding through chaos knowing exactly where to weave on the path of least resistance

That spacial awareness and IQ would be helpful in soccer. But you’d be going outside of athleticism and that’s the whole point of this debate

Friday's game will still be 9pm in London, not exactly primetime
Peak primetime viewing in the UK and most of Europe is 8-10 PM local

It’s the optimal window

Soccer is so fricking lame
I definitely value the opinion of this breed of retard

Do you think the US would benefit from having our best athletes be given dedicated soccer coaching and training from the time they could walk?
Sure

But that applies to everyone

Including the non-athletic freaks that actually dominate the modern sport

Though I guess we can focus development targeting the less impactful

Like a retarded Pareto principle

They were arse and seeing ghosts because Poch got the tactics all wrong to open the match and Belgium knew everything we were doing.

I don't think he got much in the second half right but there was nothing about opening tactics that excuse that degree of poor execution. It was the same press Garcia's been running to open games for years. They did exactly what we knew they would do

Players don't see ghosts that easily unless it's in their own heads
Do you think it wise for the Federation to build its development philosophy around an n of 1 or just focus on pulling the obvious levers we all know would actually make a difference

"We" being the lofty elite who actually follow the sport, of course
Yeah. Turns out it's not particularly viable unless you're an exceptionally rare case

And the son of an EPL regular

Unfortunately that's a small n

Just because we had more of the ball when we were chasing the game, doesn't mean he made the correct adjustments
What are the correct adjustments when everyone in the XI has the yips and shits their pants every other touch

The players were a level of arse tonight that makes tactics moot

You clearly think Americans are genetically inferior
Nah. You’re just fundamentally confused about the importance of raw athleticism in the game and what’s actually holding the country back from joining the ranks of the powers

Freak athletes not playing the sport ain’t it, unfortunately. Would be nice if it were tho

The list of in-prime managers who are willing to take 4 years off from their club careers to coach an afterthought national team is not particularly large. It's kind of wild we got him for 2 years and he would even consider more

Since we're likely to host the 2028 Copa America, a middle ground is we give him another 4 year contract and make the 2030 call based off of it
Easily drunk and laughing for no reason is a combo that goes well

then why are you, presumably an American, on an American website talking about the sport with Americans yet not calling it by the common American name
Because

1. It's the name of the sport as said aloud by 95% of the associated media I consume

2. I assume Americans aren't retarded and can use context clues to put things together

It could just be an Aggy thing, I don't know. But it's either way it's sad!
