Putting the United States in the same group of countries that do public excursions is something I didn't believe would ever happen.

***When Iraq hung Sadam it was NOT public...(Someone snuck a video out and it went viral on the Internet)
*** And yeah I watched it...besides OBL I don't know anyone that more reserved to die in public.

Do we have an example in the Bible where Jesus would want us to show and watch a public execution? Perhaps there is, I just don't know.

“Jesus” in the Old Testament had the Israelites burn their firstborn children as sacrifices. He had them violently kill mothers and babies of other peoples. He had them take up swords and violently kill each other as punishment for not worshipping him in the “correct” way.

Adultery? The whole town is supposed to participate in their execution of stoning the adulterers to death.

Child not respecting the father or mother? Death by stoning.

Caught someone working on the sabbath? The whole town stones the criminal until he is dead.

And what are they to do with a dead body that had been executed by stoning? Of course per Deuteronomy 21 they are supposed to crucify the dead body on a tree as a display to others.

Do you believe Jesus is one with the father?

There is no "likely" about it. It WILL make him a huge martyr for radical Islamicist maniacs.

This is your classic "rational v. emotional" scenario.

“ There is no "likely" about it. It WILL make him a huge martyr for radical Islamicist maniacs”.(quote SF).

So we should cower at this threat and alter policy? Hell, we just assassinated Iran’s Jihadist Leaders and decimated their Nation, with a guaranteed cou de Gras to come lest they totally give up Jihad.

This may well be a troll to entice the terror cells and lone wolves that Biden/Dems invited into our Nation to act. Actions which will then give Trump the rationale to truly clean out the Juhadist trash.

Jesus was publicly executed. Did he tell anyone not to show up?

Can you cite your data? Would love to see it.

The data on how trials were conducted is a matter of historical record. Is that the part you doubt, or what the murder rate was?

quote:

But it can also be asked, would the murder rate had been higher if there was no capital punishment?

It can, but if we're going to go there, we should also ask of today's system, would the murder rate be lower if instead of focusing on punishing offenders, we focused on rehabilitating them.

If you're willing to seriously entertain that question I will seriously entertain yours.

quote:

So when one is caught, what then? Are there any consequences?

Of course. But the data shows that it doesn't matter whether the consequences are harsh or moderate. It's the likelihood of being caught that deters.

quote:

If the likelihood of being caught is zero and the severity of punishment is nil, then there is nothing to restrain man's evil instincts. Crime of all sorts will abound.

Agreed. Good thing nobody is proposing that and it's nothing but a straw man that you made up.

Here's a chart showing the murder rate per capita from colonial times through present.

And actually, I misremembered. The colonial period I was remembering had a much higher murder rate than I thought.

Now notice that the rate fluctuates quite a bit over the course of the colonial period shown, yet swift trials and public hangings were a constant over the entire period.

Starts out sky high, then comes down to not quite twice what it is today, then down to just over what it is today, then down to below what it is today, then back up during the 1800s (although we don't have reliable enough sources to be specific). Keep in mind that we didn't stop public executions until the 1930s, so that factor was constant over all of these time periods.

The factors that historians broadly agree account for the fluctuations are:

1. Trust in the government and the legal system.

2. A sense of shared identity and community solidarity. This is why immigrants failing to assimilate really is a problem, and it's not xenophobia to identify it as a problem.

3. General political and social stability.

4. Demographic imbalances. Basically, too many young males. We're facing this problem right now—not on a population basis, but because feminism has disrupted the family. Males are civilized when they get married and have children to provide for. When they don't, they get violent. That's a recognized historical trend.

But it's clear that public executions can't be correlated with any of the changes you see above, since it was constant across all of them.

Jesus was publicly executed after having been falsely convicted in a trial that violated the authorities' own rules.

He didn't say anything about that either.

I guess that means he's for false convictions and corrupt trials.

I am in a weird position. I am pro choice, anti death penalty for financial reasons. It would be cheaper and more brutal to put someone in solitary confinement for life. If somoene does something so brutal that the death penalty is on the table, I want that person to be miserable for the remainder of their life, not to let them get off easy by ending their life early.

the exception i have for the death penalty is the military. I think the military should be able to execute military members, this being the perfect example of that. kill him. just dont broadcast it, thats nasty.

No, it doesn't. Governmental transparency might demand public access to records, or the trial, but "justice" has nothing to do with whether someone's punishment is public or not. You're being ridiculous.

quote:

but justice demands these executions MUST be public.

Plural? Now we're talking about more than one? Are you saying that all executions must be public?

If all executions have to be public, why don't all punishments have to be public? Why doesn't "justice" demand that we put cameras in every prison in the country and make the footage available to the public?

Jesus had a binary choice; fight or turn the cheek and die. He chose the latter and encouraged all who desire to enter ‘Heaven’ to do the same. Albeit “many are called yet few are chosen “.

Outside of Jesus’s Mercy as opposed to our actions in relation to the Heavenly ’high bar’ Judgement criteria, most all will be hoping for the Mercy card. We’re not turning the cheek to what we believe is pure evil. And that is why the Eschatological Narrative WILL be fulfilled. And it will be Jesus that steps in “for the sake of the Elect “. IMO, the ‘Elect’ being those who claim Grace bia Jesus Christ but are unable to meet that High Bar of self sacrifice. For various subjective reasons.

There are examples of public death in the Old Testament.
