Americans draw the line at livestreaming ‘spectacle’ of Fort Hood shooter's execution: ‘It’s an abomination’
Most supported the shooter's death sentence but warned broadcasting the firing squad execution risks turning it into 'entertainment'

How do you personally feel about this?

ETA: I get that as a country over the last hundred years, such spectacles are not terribly uncommon. And I do get why some people want it but absolutely no true spiritual Christian should want to see this themselves.

ETA2: Do we have an example in the Bible where Jesus would want us to show and watch a public execution? Perhaps there is, I just don't know.

"I'm not necessarily against giving him the death penalty, but I feel like livestreaming for people's entertainment is just weird," Nick from Virginia said.

"I agree with the sentence," Bobbie from Massachusetts said. "I don't agree with televising it."

"It’s not a practice we should be doing in modern society," Reid from Ohio said. "It's rather medieval, in my opinion. I'm certainly pro-death penalty for heinous crimes such as that, but I think that … turns it into something of a spectacle that it really doesn't have any business being."

"I think they're missing an opportunity," Jason from Virginia said. "It should be pay-per-view and all the proceeds should go to Gold Star families."

He continued, "You have someone who was a murderous traitor to our country. And there's not a lot of coverage about that. So I think the public needs and deserves to know the consequences to, well, FAFO."

"We have enough violence in our society," William from Virginia said. "I'm pretty sure he's guilty, but it doesn't need to be public. Children could be watching that."

"I just don't think that stuff like that should be put on the mainstream," Ferris from Massachusetts said. "Especially considering that children may have access to seeing it."

Myself, I don't have a problem with people seeing it. I won't be watching. But it's not like this sort of thing wasn't public spectacle in the past.

I don’t know what the purpose of it is outside of giving people something else to, justifiably, bitch about just so you can accuse them of TDS.

It makes the guy more of a martyr and gives his worthless life more meaning. It won’t actually deter anyone in the future. It desensitizes civilians to more public executions. There’s no positives and only negatives.

In his statement, Archbishop Broglio, former president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and head of the military archdiocese since 2008, called upon “all men and women of good will to ask that this decision be reconsidered,” and encouraged any Catholics involved to disassociate with the proceedings.

“As I would in the case of a procured abortion, I oblige any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request to be excused from this action contrary to the teaching of the Church,” Archbishop Broglio said.

You don’t HAVE to watch. Do they not know this?

In his statement, Archbishop Broglio — who emphasized that he “had the sad duty of presiding and preaching at the funeral of Michael Grant Cahill, the only civilian killed in that attack” — renewed his “heartfelt sympathy” to relatives of the Fort Hood attack victims. He said Hasan’s attack “disregarded the dignity of the human person.” But on the cusp of this public execution, he said, “the dignity of the human person is again at stake.”

Then there shouldn't be a line between mass murder of soldiers or murder, period. Stream all death sentences if it's a true deterrent.

Seems like most Americans across the board are overwhelmingly against it.
