I had a German Shepherd that loved the woods and to track deer. He passed away 2 years ago. I'll get another one next year.

Boykin Spaniel that I got from a connection on this board. She hunts although not much the last 2 years since my kids have stopped duck hunting now that they are college age. Bring her fishing though. She stays at the front of the boat watching your line waiting for the fish to come up so she can bite it.

Two labs, one red, one yellow, even though the red is classified as yellow. The red is 10 and the yellow is 12. Both hunt ducks and geese with me but they are at the end of the road hunting wise. I usually let my friend use his dog for long retrieves, it's younger, and mine for clean up close to the blind.

Reds… how did you train your golden?

I’m in the market for one but based on a failed past attempt many years back I’m hesitant to go the golden route and just get a lab.

4 dogs, none of them that I hunt with as there are no ducks to shoot where I hunt. I only hunt hogs, deer and squirrels now, so no need for a dog to do that.

Milly-Mixed Border Collie and Lab breed.
Ozzy-4 year old Blue Heeler.
Lou-1 year old Red Heeler and Catahoula Mix.
Elsie-6 month old Blue Heeler.

The closest any of them get to hunting is Milly and Ozzy. They team up in the back yard to catch squirrels. It's a cool show to watch. Ozzy trees them and then Milly runs the perimeter of the trees. They work the squirrels into moving from my big trees towards the north side of my property.

However, before they can get to the North side, they either have to jump down from the trees and run over open ground, or try to jump from the big hickory tree into 2 sweet olive trees in the back yard... Well when they leap from up high and land on the smaller trees with much smaller branches, sometimes they fall through and that is where Milly is waiting to snatch em.

That is their whole strategy. Make them jump from up high, onto the smaller tree branches, fall thru, then snatch em. I've watched them do it several times now.

Hell maybe I should take them into woods after all.

2 boykin spaniels, one 1.5 yrs old and one 6 month old.

Got the first one and then kids/wife wanted a second one so they didn’t have to share one dog.

The only hunting they do so far is one hunts her own shite to eat. Second season dove will be their first time coming up.

Mostly Water Dog with a good supplement of YouTube videos when I’d get stuck. Goldens handle pressure a lot differently than labs.

Make sure you get one from a good bloodline and stick to it. To me, a good hunting golden is the perfect dog. Sweet as can be in the house and smart machines in the marsh.

Golden Retriever.. female.. Not a hunting dog

She will be 6 months Sunday.. She stubborn/smart and still has a great deal of energy. One unexpected aspect of her personality is she will bow up to anything.. Big German Shepherd on one side and a big black lab on the other, both inside fences. She has never taken any gruff from either one even as a puppy. Wasn't expecting that..

English Setters and English Pointers.

We hunt wild Bob White quail in North TX and Woodcock in CENLA. (Live in Shreveport)

I've been pushing the guys to load up and go North for pheasant, but nothing has materialized yet. A breeder we got a dog from in Kansas is coming to N. TX to quail hunt with us this year, and I'm hoping he'll reciprocate and invite us up to his place.

I have an old and a young heeler. Obviously never really hunted with them.

In her prime, the old one would have been a heck of a squirrel dog. Only problem would have been that when she was after something, she’d go into silent stealth mode.

The young one would be easy to get hunting sheds. I’ve marked a stick and thrown it into a pile of similar sticks and she’ll dig around until she finds the one I threw.

I’ve also watched her spend five minutes methodically searching a field for something she knew she left in it. Getting her to know we’re after sheds would be easy.

German Shorthaired Pointer and English Pointer. Both hunt woodcock and quail (mostly pen raised). I want to make a trip for some wild birds (quail, chukar, pheasant, anything really).
My GSP will track a deer/hog.

I grew up with my dad's rabbit hunting beagles. That's probably the some of the best hunting.

I want to get a bird dog but the opportunities are just limited in South Louisiana.

Clyde do you have any recommendations on where to hunt in North Texas?

1.5 year old wirehaired pointing griffon

Has tracked deer already, and worked pen raised quail with me. We head out to Kansas for our first real wild upland hunt in December

I used to say the same thing. Just pull the trigger. We have a month for woodcock, then you can hunt some pen birds once or twice a year here then take a trip to chase wild birds once a year

And just buy a bird dog that can also track deer.
