re: Turkey Season

Great story! I wish I had something similar but no dice. Haven’t heard a gobble in quite some time at our place. No bird for me this year!
This morning I called in three Jakes that seemed to have the zoomies for about 5 minutes. They were playfully chasing each other around and bouncing in the air. Quite entertaining

Hammer, were they pretty vocal for yall this season and lately?
Also SW MS, but they have been pretty quiet since the first couple weeks. Birds were in our area opening week, but have disappeared since. Granted, I only hunted a few times. Hunted a couple times in LA, they like the neighbor’s property more!
Did have one come in today around 10:30-10:45 but silent. It rained from about 7:45-10am. As soon as the rain slowed down, I went to the edge of a clear cut and started calling. Bird came in quick and I hesitated thinking it was a jake. It may have been just over 6 inch beard. He busted me lifting the gun. That’s been my one and only encounter all season besides another small Jake. Had a great season last year, this year I may not get one!

Struggling to get on birds in Pearl River County. Heard one close on opening day but messed up my set up.
Have heard a few since then but nothing close and nothing firing off past fly down time, except for one the second Sunday of the season. He was firing off for an hour or so but was far.
Have heard a few shots close by.
We did shoot 3 birds off this property last year by this week. There were plenty of birds around in February and early March but they’ve disappeared. We haven’t pressured them too hard unless the locals are hopping property lines.
Trying my luck in Tangipahoa/Washington Parish opening day.

I do have a tractor and my dad has a pto auger, just not sure what size diameter.
I’m in the planning stage, so not sure what type of post I’ll be using.
Thanks for the recommendations!

Bringing this back because I want some recommendations on posts.
For a 3-4 rail fence with woven wire, do you need to concrete all the post? I feel like that’s overkill and pricey for 1.5 acres. I get maybe where there is a gate where the added stability is warranted.
Will tamping it keep the post straight and the wire up (assuming the corners/ends are braced)?
We are in the Covington/Abita/Waldheim area if that helps to answer with soil and weather conditions.

Great dogs! I have one. Basically agree with everyone above. I bought mine locally that I found on Facebook of all places. AKC and all that. She’s been a great dog in the field and at home. She’s my first bird dog. My next one I’ll probably get from a reputable breeder but as a pup, not finished.
But buying a finished dog in Louisiana would be tough. I’d definitely travel and find a breeder/trainer where upland hunting is more prevalent.
What type of birds do you want to hunt? What do you mean by “ready for anything”?

That is nice! It's something I definitely can manage, but finding the time will be issue.

Fencing recommendation
Posted by yodaddyroberto on 1/21/26 at 2:07 pm
My wife and I are wanting to fence our ~11 acres in St. Tammany.
We want the front of the property to "look nice" and be practical for future livestock (at a small scale sheep/goats/cattle) and/or to deter other dogs/coyotes.
We are thinking wooden fence with woven wire. The whole area is about 1.5 acres or so. The rest of the property I'll probably do myself with T post and wooden post with the woven wire. That would be done in sections.
For the small "nicer" section, does anyone have any recommendations on fencing contractors in my area?
I do have access to a tractor and auger, so I potentially could do it myself and save a bunch of money. However, a contractor could get it done a whole lot quicker.
EDIT: also open to ideas and seeing what everyone else has done for similar scenarios.

I’ve had one since 2020. It’s a great gun but I just don’t shoot well with it. Now it may be due to the type of hunting I do, but my hit rate is higher with my semi auto 20.
re: Rabbit hunting
Posted by yodaddyroberto on 11/28/25 at 9:18 pm to xBirdx
My dad was a big rabbit hunter in the 80-90s. He says most of the places they hunted are not accessible (leased, etc) or don’t exist anymore due to land loss or developments. Sometimes they’d take the boat out and island hop in the marshes.
I went a few times as a kid and always loved it. Now it’s very rare to go. One of his old hunting buddies still does field trials and we go hunt with him.

Miller Taxidermy in Poplarville
Posted by yodaddyroberto on 11/10/25 at 10:52 am
Does anyone know if Miller is still in business?
My dad has used him over the years with good results. Back in 2020 he brought 2 bucks and I brought a black coyote to get the pelt.
The bucks were done but never got the coyote pelt. I remember he said he outsourced to a guy in Covington/Hammond/Ponchatoula (I think, can’t remember exactly).
I’ve called plenty of times without answer. I even drove by the house but the gate was closed, not locked and didn’t want to open it and drive in unannounced.
If any knows what his status is or of someone who tans furs in the area that would be appreciated!

re: Deer hunting around Poplarville MS
Posted by yodaddyroberto on 8/19/25 at 9:29 am to enjoylife72
I have hunted our place in Poplarville most of my life. We are west of town.
Deer are small and very jumpy, but there are a few big bucks around, just at 3 am or if you're lucky to see them chasing.
We burn, so turkey numbers have been great for us. We shot 3 toms last season on 175 acres, and there were a few left in addition to jakes. We are even seeing/hearing a few coveys of Bobwhites.
We used to have a lot of hogs, but we don't see them as often. Part of me believes its due to us burning. I'm really not sure. I just know that around the time we started burning, 6-8 years or so, until now, hogs are not as plentiful.

We were just out there on the Pelican.
Marker 54 shrimp under popping cork was our best combo.
Topwater was also doing well.
Matrix shad magneto or light colors under a cork were also doing well.

I was actually in this exact same scenario. Ordered the otter creek titanium this week. I’ll mostly use it on my 15-22 rifle but also Walther p22.

Where would one find a tree to buy? I'd like to plant one at our home on the northshore. Would be great to have bait for kids to use.

I agree with the food plots!
also NO MOW MAY
There is no reason to bush hog your fields and roads from April to August-September. Those poults need that cover and what food it provides.

I understand that, but would they have a right to or have the government build a road or path to their property? Assuming it was land locked.
