re: Why does Louisiana suck?

A lot of mistakes and misfortunes piled up over 200 years or so and left us pretty non-competitive and stuck with a very uneducated population and incompetent leadership. A lot of it was easier to ignore in the past because folks didn’t have easy access to information about it, and higher fertility rates buffered population loss to more competitive states.
Seems like every headwind we encountered from the opening of the Erie Canal in the 1820s, to the exodus of oil and gas jobs in the 1980s, to Hurricane Katrina and beyond, leadership has ALWAYS been caught flat-footed and unprepared. The good ole boy system that’s so strong here has always ensured the most connected person, not the most qualified, gets to run the show. Often to the great detriment to everyone except their cronies.

Our population base is not attractive to any major industry looking to relocate.
Relocation is not the issue. It’s our inability to organically grow and innovate within an industry here. We have no problem being the manufacturing hub for many sectors. We have the problem being the innovation (and thus talent) hub for these sectors.

The Fat Cats in our government promised that the profits would all go to education. foR ThE cHilDRen!!!
That convinced people to vote for it.
At the last minute, the fat cats changed the bill so the profits went to a "general fund".
Not exactly. What they did was a classic Bait and Switch. They promised gambling money would go to Education. Which it did. BUT what those frickers did is re-allocate all of the other money that had been going to education. So there was no meaningful net increase to the education budget. It was a shrewd move.

Because of the people who live and vote there.

Louisiana has a lot of poverty (duh) so when you look at life expectancy, education, healthcare it's skewed because of those high rates. For someone who lives here who makes a good living they can easily have a good life but that's not what those statistics are expressing.
My biggest issue with Louisiana is our infrastructure compared to others. In the town where i live we have major road issues, electrical issues, water issues and other areas where you can see in real terms where our lack of tax base impacts our standard of living.

It's a poorly managed state. Poor education as well
Absolutely true….because the voters of Louisiana historically would rather have leadership that is interesting and had character instead of focusing on what is best for the state and its economy.
Widespread corruption has historically held Louisiana back.

Fair enough. Either way, frick those crooks. They’ll never get another dime of my tax money.

The political system is super corrupt (Texans compete, Louisianians collude), a massive percentage of the population is generationally poor, the education system is poor, the economy is based on resource extraction (with success tied exclusively to commodities pricing changes), the entrepreneurial spirit of the populace is lacking relative to other parts of the U.S., basic infrastructure is constantly under siege by nature (leading to much higher maintenance costs), and the society in general values enjoyment of life and belonging to one’s social class far more than it prioritizes hard work and upward mobility.

Louisiana is a pro-gun, anti-abortion blue state.

let's be honest...demographics are the main reason it sucks. Demographics affect everything whether you want to admit it or not.

I love Louisiana - but political corruption has ruined this state.
Nearly every measurable economic metric, Louisiana is dead last or next to last.
The majority of the best graduates from the three best universities in the state (LSUBR, LaTech, ULL) are gone as soon as they graduate….and I can’t blame them. Just look at what neighboring states offer compared to Louisiana.
Job opportunities
Economic diversity
Public education opportunities
Medical care
Low crime
Robust infrastructure
Multiple entertainment options
No taxes on retirement accounts
Lower insurance costs / exposure
The list goes on and on….there are just better opportunities outside Louisiana.

but sure lets blame the successful people

Very poorly managed. With industry and access to the river, it should be a thriving state. Money is wasted constantly by the government.
WAS poorly managed, now Landry has it steered correctly, but will yake time
LAWYERS have ruined the state. Via ambulance chasing etc, or thru JBE leading Carmouche in legacy and erosion lawsuits.
Thats why industry stays away or has left.
Tort reform, or we stay fricked.
Its amazing, we have the 2 most successful states, on both side of us basically (Tx and FL) all you have to do is follow their blueprint.
Democrats are morons

Political corruption, public apathy and a weird desire to accept less to “stay home” that seemingly doesn’t exist in other areas

Dammit. At first glance I was like “nah”.
But, I think you’re right. Most blacks vote blue and way more whites vote blue than should. White democrats are a mix of good ol boys who benefit from the corruption, pinko liberals, and dirt poor dumbasses who survive off the government teat.
The conservatives in LA are fighting a losing battle.

And this segways into my longstanding rant - this state needs 3 maybe 4 universities
1) Louisiana State University - true flagship for the state - includes medical, legal schools - most state funding needs to go here (not athletics)
2) Louisiana Tech University - primary university north of Alexandria
3) University of Louisiana Lafayette - serve the state’s most robust growth area of SWLA
4) maybe a presence in New Orleans
Everything else becomes juco type feeder programs where the best students can end up in one of the 4 schools mentioned above OR transition to a trade type skill development.

It's the people from the bottom to the top, IMO. Let's not sugarcoat this and pretend the entire state is helpless and can't vote these incompetent good ole boys out of office.

Lots of black people.

Poor. Fat. Stupid.
The average Louisiana resident meets at least 2 of the 3 above criteria.
And that percentage are having the most babies.
