Good news. Louisiana is looking up when it comes to education.

"Louisiana is the only state to surpass pre-pandemic levels in both reading and math,
according to a new report from Harvard, Stanford, and Dartmouth

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana continues to lead the nation in academic improvement, according to the latest Education Scorecard released today by researchers from Harvard University, Stanford University, and Dartmouth College. The 2026 report shows Louisiana ranks first among states in reading growth and second among states in math. Louisiana is the only state where average student performance has surpassed 2019 levels in both reading and math."

I mean what else needs to be said? You think the metrics are there to ignore? It matters to most people. The state is perplexing to be honest. Horrible leadership consistently and terrible government.

Louisiana is one of the most resource rich states in the country but it's heavily poverty stricken. No leader takes advantage of their massive potential industry on resources. It should be one of not the richest southern state if you didn't have morons for leaders.

Or maybe that's the intent? If you keep the population education down for example and you know the right people, you stay in power right?

It starts at the top. Nothing gets done unless palms are greased. As a result education, infrastructure, etc suffer and when you have a bunch of uneducated people running around on shite roads with no auto insurance. Just a bunch of trickling down things..

The people of the Louisiana, their culture, their joy of life has always made them suseptable to exploitation and criticism. I recall a British official of the occupying force in Novia Scotia made the same observation of the Acadians. They had no money - they bartered for everything, yet he observed that - these (Acadians) are the happiest people he had ever seen.

As for as religion goes, they all were devout Catholic and practiced tolerance and generosity. I recall that was always the traits of my cajun relatives and neighbors - tolerance and generosity. Certainly the traits of my Mom. Her vocation was hospitality. Looking back on the example she set for us kids, I sincerely believe she saw each guest that entered our home as a Wayfaring Stranger sent by God. It was her duty to feed him a good meal and send him on his way. Inevitably, if you were a stranger visiting us she would eventually get around to asking you - have you had anything to eat?

And therein is what made them so vulnerable. When the British soldiers came into their villages, and ordered them to vacate their homes - they did not resist, they did exactly as they were told. Confrontation, conflict, and violence just wasn't in their culture. What followed was truly a heartbreaking ordeal for my ancestors. Almost too painful for me to detail even now.

So I leave my TD Nation (or whomever) with this observation. The People of Louisiana are the friendliest, most tolerant, most generous, most joyous people I've ever known (at least that's how I remember them). I had to leave South Louisiana in order to support my family (you know how it is - children marry, grandkids, etc). Otherwise, I'd still be in that blessed place.

And I love their LSU Football Team as well. Geaux Tigahs.

Thanks!

Just wanted to help. I received a Texas public school education before I moved back to Louisiana for high school and college. I used to tutor Louisiana kids who were behind on reading.

But, I think you’re right. Most blacks vote blue and way more whites vote blue than should. White democrats are a mix of good ol boys who benefit from the corruption, pinko liberals, and dirt poor dumbasses who survive off the government teat.

The conservatives in LA are fighting a losing battle.

Why are you saying that?

The conservatives (Republicans) have held control of both the Senate and the House of the Louisiana Congress for 16 straight years!

Sure lets do away with the 3rd largest university by enrollment

Yes

I am going by academic ranking - take the top 3 schools overall plus metro NO

That leaves you the entire LSU BR system - med school, dental, law, ag research, etc - ULL and LaTech.

Everybody else is a kick up feeder / trade school.

And for rankings, LSU is the top dog - ULL and Tech will consistently be 2-3 in whatever ranking / ratings you want to analyze…..and both are woefully underfunded.

In this state, we reward poor academic performance and other late money per student….we burn SO much money at crap schools.

Finally, this allows LSU to build their university foundation. LSU’s non athletic foundation is a national joke when it comes to those rankings.

The reason it sucks is because the money that should be invested into infrastructure, schools, and growing business here is miss allocated or outright stolen.

Yep, repubs are in charge and things are better every fricking day. Have no fear, you dunb fricks will come in and buttfrick the state again, when given the slightest power.

inability to organically grow and innovate within an industry here

If you want home grown innovation just look at offshore oil and gas. Where Tidewater in New Orleans originated the logistics model copied by all others. In Lafayette John Chance's Starfix predated precision surveying before today's GPS and Oceaneering in Morgan City applied ROV technology around the world.

The hardest part to explain is that the money flowing from those innovations is now of greatest benefit out of state and out of country.

It starts at the top.

Nay, it starts at the bottom. Everyone is willing to grease a hand to get a parking spot, to get their picture on the front of the Latin Chamber of Commerce Mag, and that leads to grift, bribes, and all the other shite. Hondurans are corrupt as frick, and it's no wonder the largest population of Hondurans outside of Honduras are in New Orleans.

How Mississippi can get over "racism" (or the latest excuse) and improve education, but Louisiana just stews in its own crap is amazing. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of fatigue in Houston, but why can MS and AL improve, and LA just... Never does.

This. If you compare Louisiana to Arkansas for example, both small southern states. Next door to each other, one is 52K square miles, the other is 53K square miles. Louisiana has a lot more potentially going on. It is simply mismanaged. It's not how rich you are, it's what you do with your money that's equally as important. Arkansas seems to do more with what it has.
