I just think that they are good at using their hands etc. but paperwork and follow ups isn’t their strong suit.

I sympathize. I rely a lot on relative screaming volume to set my own work priorities.

They are cherry-picking the work they want and following up with those people.

A wife with auto cad drawings is a wife who will likely boss them around and look over their shoulders during the job and tell them that they're not doing it correctly.

WTF is this non-sense?

So say his wife is an architect/interior designer. They don't want to take directives from a professional or someone that knows wtf they are talking about?

A contractor doesn't get to come in, tell me what I want, and build it how they want. That's not how it works.

I work for a reputable residential and commercial contractor that specializes in renovation work. Feel free to reach out anytime. I can provide my contact information if would like.

No doubt. Usually you should work with the contractor.

The OP said no one is replying. Contractors often pass without saying they pass. If no one is responding after meeting him then you have to look at the common denominator.

Even when multiple people replied that he could be the problem he doubled down that all contractors are worthless.

Long story short, not enough skilled labor, bigger fish to fry with hurricane damage. You can thank school systems for pushing everyone to college and not a trade. It's only going to get worse. The Mike Rowes of the world are trying to help, but it won't help.

There is so much truth to this. I was listening to the Michael Berry show a couple of years ago and he was taking calls from people that employed positions that required trades. A caller stated that the average age of a plumber journeyman in Houston was above 50. Other people said their biggest problem was getting people that had not had DUI’s so insurance companies would allow them to drive company vehicles. One guy said they resorted to hiring 18 year olds just to drive the actual craftsman around due to driving records.

I’m my area there are a couple of big “ professionals” contractors that will always make appointments on time etc
But they are much higher and I think they charge even to come out for an estimate

The guys you are dealing with will come check out the job and rank your job on value to them, as long as other jobs are more valuable to them you won’t see them. They keep stringing you along in case they need to fall back on your job.
I’m sure their intention is to get back to you but bigger jobs keep coming up

While it might suck, you're more likely to get a response if you were to go with a smaller company, like one who specializes in small renovations, or one just starting out. All the bigger, more reputable companies are looking for big projects that will make them actual money.

No, he's saying if everyone you meet is an a-hole, well, you know the rest.

Exactly. Every addition/renovation I have done started with plans I drew. That was never a problem for any contractor I have worked with.

As a side note, prior to buying a house here we had glass replacements ordered for two windows from a local company.

That'd be why. Glass replacement is almost never profitable. You have to have a tiny overhead or a dumb customer to pay the price you need to charge to make money changing out glass packs and not just the whole unit.

When you do get one to give you a decent quote and you hire him, then you get the next step. Which is them not showing up on days they tell you they will be there to work...or showing up at 1PM when they tell you they will be there at 8AM.

Older guy I know who flips houses says it is damn near impossible to get subs who are reliable and consistent. He's been doing this for 35 years (before it became a fad side hustle) and said it has gotten exponentially worse in the past 15 years. Mainly due to substance abuse and general lack of responsibility among the younger contractors.

50% of the problem is cocksucker GCs. Stop nickle and diming TF out of your subs and they might show up on time and do a decent job.

There are more jobs out there than reputable/competent contractors. Especially with hurricane work happening across South LA.

They chase the bigger jobs. They don't have time for the smaller ones. It's an issue no doubt.

this was touched on in the guy who wanted to be his own GC thread a couple of days back.

subs want constant work. one guy breaking up their work for a one off job instead of constant customers/contractors is a pain. may be better to hire a GC and pay the 20% upcharge just to get people to take the work instead of direct with subs.

Are there reputable contractors in Baton Rouge?

There are a few but most are POS. It took us two months to find someone to do our renovations. One guy came in and acted like our house was a shanty and quoted double what our contractor quoted. My favorite was the guy who came out, walked the property, took notes and then told me that they only do quotes once they’ve been selected. He tried to give me his card and I told him, “No thanks, your lack of transparency is a little alarming.”

It’s such a crap shoot that it’s almost worth figuring out how to do it yourself if possible.

I’m surprised you’ve gotten the contractors out to come look at your house.

I’ve called a few places and talked to two guys personally - and none of them have even come out to look at what needs to be done. It’s very frustrating.
