Why do home renovation contractors never follow up on providing quotes?

This has happened to me multiple times in Baton Rouge. We want to have some kitchen renovations. I have had multiple contractors come by and take measurements, explain what they recommend and never follow up. My wife made AutoCad drawings of what she wanted for one of the contractors and we still never heard back.

As a side note, prior to buying a house here we had glass replacements ordered for two windows from a local company. The closing settlement paid for them directly up front. It has been 7 months and they are still making excuses.

Are there reputable contractors in Baton Rouge?

They don't want to take over the shoulder criticism from a Karen.

Honestly, it could be that no amount of money would make them want to take your job.

They don't want to work for you.

This is exactly why! That and probably not enough money in to make it worth their time.

Its because they have larger projects they can make more money on.

In saying that then WTF don't they just say that!

When you do get one to give you a decent quote and you hire him, then you get the next step. Which is them not showing up on days they tell you they will be there to work...or showing up at 1PM when they tell you they will be there at 8AM.

Older guy I know who flips houses says it is damn near impossible to get subs who are reliable and consistent. He's been doing this for 35 years (before it became a fad side hustle) and said it has gotten exponentially worse in the past 15 years. Mainly due to substance abuse and general lack of responsibility among the younger contractors.

So you are saying there are no reputable or competent contractors?

A lot of contractors are making bank in Lake Charles right now. They don't really want a small job that will pay half of what they are getting in LC. Same goes for your glass, they already have the money from you so they are making all they can in LC before they come do your job.

It's always a pain dealing with contractors, but with the amount of work going on in a lot of areas, it's a huge pain in the arse.

I've got a friend in Memphis who is so busy he just makes up ridiculous numbers and throws them out there, and some people are just willing to pay whatever to have their house redone by one of the current "it" guys

Your inability to see your own flaws is likely a large contributor to the type of homeowner they don't want to work for.

Contractors aren't hurting for business right now. Why take the job that will be a PITA when they can fill up on reasonable customers?

Because they don't want to turn you down. They want to keep you hanging in case some of their other jobs fall through.

I don't know you personally, but I can tell you that most sub contractors are pretty busy these days, and when they do a walk through with a customer who they think will be troublesome/a nag/ annoying/ a know it all/ a pain in the arse/ hard to deal with, or all of the above, they smile when they leave and know before they start the truck that they will never see you again because they don't want to deal with you and don't need the work.
If they were not busy it would be a different story.
A wife with auto cad drawings is a wife who will likely boss them around and look over their shoulders during the job and tell them that they're not doing it correctly.

Think about it....they do this work for a living and you call them for a job and are willing to pay.....what else can it be?

They can pick and choose which customers they want.
And they don't want you.

And the obvious flaws being?

If providing a drawing with the dimensions they will need to develop a quote is intimidating, I guess they wouldn’t want to ever do commercial work. Incidentally we did get one call back from that guy asking for a second copy of the drawing since he had lost it. Still never received the quote. Both contractors were very friendly, made good suggestions and acted interested.

I’d rather them tell me on the phone they aren’t interested in anything less than $30K or whatever if that is the reason.

They come to “feel you out” first. If it seems you’re nit picking or just plain broke, they won’t bother. If they feel you’re for real with some change then you’ll get your quote.

Yup. You'll have an easier time getting a guy out for "I need 2,500 sq. ft. of solid oak flooring installed" than for "one of my faux shutters came loose." Nowadays you're on your own with that little stuff, and it sucks.
