Alabama > Mississippi > Louisiana

I have lived in MS and LA.

The "main attraction" of MS is that when you go to do something (be it play golf, or eat at a restaurant, or whatever) you don't have to compete with 900 nouveau riche Pakistanis for a parking spot.

There are shite holes like that scattered all over MS. The biggest difference is just not as much people living in those towns.

There are major differences between Louisiana and Mississippi. For one thing, Louisiana is much more industrialized. There's a whole town that's covered in orange dust because of some decrepit old aluminum smelter, and that's just one of the many polluters on the river between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Even the drive up I-49 to Shreveport is kind of an industrial wasteland. I can't remember ever seeing anything like that in MS.

And then there's the totally dysfunctional Louisiana state government. It's not like the Mississippi state government is great, but at least the state doesn't suffer from a constitution willfully engineered by Edwin Edwards to allow for graft. Louisiana also has a lot more illegal immigrants, and some of the worst public schools imaginable. What Jefferson Parish in particular has become is just depressing.

Mississippi's main drawback IMO is the weird, arrogant Calvinist streak that seems to infect every church there. The thing about Calvinists, though, is that by and large they don't try to get you to join their church. They think God "elected" them and the 14 other people who go to their metal building church and if you personally did not receive this blessing, well, sucks to be you! Weighed against everything else, though, this is a relatively small complaint.

You can say the same thing about Las Vegas, but guess what……

Alabama is head and shoulders above LA/MS. LA is last simply due to how severely it has underachieved with all the advantages it has.

Oil and gas reserves, the river and port, huge industrial sector. All pissed away.

MS is nothing but a small Agricultural state with a sliver of nice coast area. Northern MS is nice to with the rolling hills but still nothing exceptional. The fact that it is even in the running puts it ahead of LA.

LA should easily br a top 10 state economically in the country.

1. Alabama: Gulf Shores/Fairhope, possibly a mountainous area I haven't visited yet
2. Mississippi: Coast, excluding Waveland and Pascagoula
3. Louisiana: Nada

Worst is Mississippi.
Second worst is Louisiana.
Third worst is Alabama.
