The Scarlett Letter.
Hawthorne wrote in these ridiculous run on sentences that took up half a page when he could have described his point just as easily in a 10 words.
This combined with the English of the times made it an excruciating read.
This is my runner up - a very close second.

Beowulf was pretty hard to understand without some expert coming into class and explaining it to you.

I came into this thread to say The Awakening. Good call.
What a stupid message. I hated that book as a kid and hate it even more now in retrospect.

Paradise Lost.
Or Walden by Thoreau. HATED that one, but that might've been influenced by my dislike for my teacher

Beowulf was one of the best books I read in high school.
A Tale of Two Cities, The Scarlett Letter, and Shakespeare was terrible. Hard Times by Dickens was ok, other than that his books are tough to get through.
I did not care for The Great Gatsby either.

Oh, that book sucked too. That’s the one when she finally gets a husband she likes and he gets rabies?
Better than Native Son. Dude kills s chick because “oppressed, scared of white people”.Funny though because the teacher told us to skip pages 33-34 and don’t read them. The main characters have a jerk session in a movie theater.

Five Women Who Loved Love
Imagine my anticipation when I learned it was controversial and erotic for our age
Imagine my disappointment when I realized it was from 1685 and Japanese
