If you weren’t gay people didn’t really worry about it too much. Straight people mainly feared contracting it through blood infusions. I’m sure if you were growing up in LA, San Fran or New York it probably felt more like a clear and present danger. I was in my teens and twenties but to most people in the South it was an afterthought although we were aware of the impact that it was having in certain areas.

I'm 25, but many of my mentors in medical school were residents or practicing during that time. There was definitely a lot of fear towards it. If you contracted it, you were dead. As bad as it was, the hysteria surrounding it can definitely be compared to COVID minus the lockdowns, mainly stemming from not knowing anything about the virus. People were scared to touch AIDS patients, so it was a big deal when Diana shook hands with an AIDS patient without gloves. Everyone initially thought it was only contracted through gay sex. Magic Johnson and Arthur Ashe disproved that.

It's amazing that we are able to manage it now to the point where you can have undetectable viral load

It was the man on man butt sex that caused it.

Covid was a close second though to gay butt sex.

There were all sorts of people that believed that if they allowed non vax family members to come over, it would make the world sick. It was pretty much exactly the mentality of wanting to have gay butt sex

Arthur Ashe got it from a blood transfusion during heart surgery.
Magic got it from gay sex.

Wake up in the morning, go to the bathroom and see " Welcome to the real world of AIDS" written in lipstick on your bathroom mirror. Go back to bed.

That was hilarious to see in the episode itself.

That kid was in everything, then he grew up and was just a kind of gross fat guy, who I identify with but that didn't do him much good in Hollywood.

Those Urban Legends were spreading like wildfire.

What's funny is back in the day they tried so hard to keep young people from having sex and now they're freaking out about young people not having sex.

didn't know anybody personally affected.

My mom told me stories about a cousin of hers that had HIV. She was his fig hag. He died either before I was born or shortly after. I always assumed he got AIDS and died. Figured out when I was in my early 20s that he died in a car crash when I mentioned him dying of AIDS to my mom.

It was on the news every night. As time went by they did try to scare people. The activists overrepresented its prevalence in the straight non drug abusing community. If everyone is afraid, everyone will support billions spent on dealing with it.

If you came down with full blown AIDS, it was pretty much just a matter of time before it took you out. And it didn't discriminate-----young, old, male, female.

It hit the gay community and the idiot drug users who shared needles. Once it got hold of you, it went pretty fast since the medical profession had little idea how to deal with it at that time.

I do remember probably around 1978 or 79 one of the supervisors at the plant I was working at then had a son die from HIV/AIDS and no one really understood what this new thing was all about. Of course there were assholes running their mouth that "he got what he deserved" etc. etc.

Then around late 80's I was working at a different place and there was a safety tech there that found out all three of his sons were HIV positive. .... fast forward and only one is still alive.

There’s a great bit by Denis Miller on the AIDS thing during his first ever standup special at HBO, Mr. Miller goes to Washington.

It’s on YouTube, but won’t let me embed the video. In fact, it’s pretty much right on with what was going on in the 80s.

We assumed if we weren't gay we had nothing to worry about.

There are documents out there that show doctors re-examining old, strange pneumonia and other various disease cases from dead people from as far back as the early 60s which was well before the 1980 timeline commonly accepted as the origin of AIDS. It's just that in the 60s, people had no idea what it was so the person was classified as having just died from pneumonia or something similar. I went down a rabbit hole years ago reading about it.

Well, when you go into a bath house and frick anything moving, you have tendencies to spread STD’s.
