terrorizing people with AIDS fear mongering was a pretty shitty way to go about altering peoples behaviors

it wasn't fun. your parents convinced you that, if you had sex, you're probably gonna die. most were even scared to have sex even with rubbers.

There are documents out there that show doctors re-examining old, strange pneumonia and other various disease cases from dead people from as far back as the early 60s which was well before the 1980 timeline commonly accepted as the origin of AIDS. It's just that in the 60s, people had no idea what it was so the person was classified as having just died from pneumonia or something similar. I went down a rabbit hole years ago reading about it.
AIDS origin may have ties in NOLA.... Dr Mary's Monkey........

It was all fun and games until it hit the heterosexual community.

When Magic announced he had it and was immediately retiring from the NBA it was late 1991, so even then it was considered a death sentence and everyone assumed he could no longer play basketball because he'd infect everyone else out there. We all assumed he would be dead within a year.

Bull fricking shite. We were constantly being told we could get it from straight sex and even from touching / ingesting some blood, spit or other bodily fluids.

The very early 80's was dominated by the Herpes scare. You did NOT want to get herpes. It was for LIFE.
Then came AIDS and, except for a few well publicized cases, was contained to the drug user , gay community. I know in college in mid / late 80's, contracting AIDS was not a big worry. Of course MTV was your 'all AIDS all the time' network, so it was always in your face
The gaslighting continued well into the 90's , though. Living in Bham, I got a hold of a research update that UAB would mail out. One article on AIDS research made a point to note that 'AIDS was not behavior related disease'. Whaaaaa?

I remember there was a baywatch episode that revolved around one of the lifeguards giving mouth to mouth, it was about her finding out he had AIDS while giving mouth to mouth to him and she did not use a pocket mask. The the rest of the show was about one of her buddy lifeguards worried she my have caught it and being paranoid about mouth to mouth

My brother and 2 cousins died from being hemophiliacs and contracting AIDS. My brother was 9 years old when he was infected. It's estimated that about 10,00 to 20,000 hemophiliacs died from AIDS or hepatitis. Louisiana lost around 200 hemophiliacs to AIDS.
Baton Rouge has one of highest HIV cases among homosexuals and black heterosexual females.

Like the other replier state KNOE had one right in TV.
I had a close friend die of aids in the mid 90"s he was from Monroe.
He didn't tell his family until a few weeks before his death.
He wasn't gay. He slept around a bunch.

Turns out it was a disease of gay men and intravenous drug users, but Anthony Fauci told us all we were all just as likely to get it if we had sex with our girlfriends. So he was a lying POS even way back then. But yes it definitely was on everyone's mind there for a while.
True that gay men and intravenous drug users were more prone to HIV and full blown AIDS, but make no mistake in thinking heterosexual women could not get infected too.
If a gal is having a fair amount of casual sex and one of her men is bisexual, then he could be an HIV carrier and pass it on to her and she, in turn, could pass it on to future lovers.
Then there were those that came down with AIDS due to blood transfusions before they started testing donated blood products for the virus.
The above happened to mobster Greg Scarpa, a notorious hitman for the Colombo Crime Family of New York. He needed surgery and some blood transfusions and had some of his mobster friends donate blood for him to use because he didn't like the idea of potentially being given blood from a black donor.
One of those that did was a heavy steroid user and shared needles at the gym resulting in him becoming HIV positive. Scarpa was a very fit man but had whittled down to well under 100 lbs. at the time of his death.

How the 80s gays were treated was despicable. If you know gays/lesbians from the 80s and 90s show a little respect because they literally fought for that.

All the straight guys had to really watch how much they had to drink when they went out.

I worked in a blood bank at that time and it was horrible. A lot of people died from getting infected blood. Once testing of donor blood began, things settled down over time.
