What were the 80s like in regards to the HIV/AIDS epidemic?

I've watched several documentaries. The way these people died in the early 80s was absolutely terrible. They were getting all sorts of diseases and infections.
What was the reaction to everyone? Was it as big as covid? Were people afraid of gay white men? Or are these docs exaggerating everything?
I'm glad now we have the medicine which makes watching these 1980s docs easier to watch
*This is coming from a straight guy who dives into new subjects all the time.

Vaginas were covered with hair.

Pretty scary times in that regard.
NSFW Audio.
I mean minus the lockdowns, maybe. I was just different. We didn't have the internet fear mongering like we did with Covid. But it had peoples attention. I think folks knew what the consequences were so didn't mess around with it.
Yes.
No.

Not sure this does anything, but as a rural pre-teens we were acutely aware.
Middle school health classes had part of the curriculum very much focused on AIDS/HIV.

It was the first disease to have civil rights.

Good qeustion. it was strictly a gay plague at first, but then everybody thought everybody could get it easily. Now we know a little different.
You cannot appreciate the magnitude of Magic announcing he had HIV.

It was nerve racking for many people but those that were straight knew they had a lower risk. Everyone was very careful.
How the 80s gays were treated was despicable. If you know gays/lesbians from the 80s and 90s show a little respect because they literally fought for that. Not saying I agree with the lifestyle choice but people are people.
Nothing has ever shut the world down like COVID did in the age we are in. It was and still is unprecedented to think about even today. I don't know if we have ever fully recovered in totality.
That said, time will tell, we may be heading into another crazy situation.

My mom was living in Montrose in the 80s, and she said that everyone was afraid to buy their food at the grocery stores in the gayborhood.
Interesting that now Montrose is considered one of the nicer areas in Houston. Quite a comeback story for the gays.

To me it was like a major event happening in another country. I saw all the news stories but didn't know anybody personally affected.

I watched a documentary a few years ago where a former member of the Reagan Administration said they were told to push the AIDS fear mongering because Reagan felt people were too promiscuous and should be leading a more puritan life.
They tried to make every heterosexual person think they were going to get AIDS by having sex with other heterosexuals when in reality AIDS was being spread amongst gays with hundreds of partners (and drug addicts).
Reagan may have been right about people being too promiscuous, but terrorizing people with AIDS fear mongering was a pretty shitty way to go about altering peoples behaviors

Bull fricking shite. We were constantly being told we could get it from straight sex and even from touching / ingesting some blood, spit or other bodily fluids. I was always worried about it in college right up until the girl I brought home from Murphys that night got her pants off. Then I somehow always managed to not worry about it until the next day.

Turns out it was a disease of gay men and intravenous drug users, but Anthony Fauci told us all we were all just as likely to get it if we had sex with our girlfriends. So he was a lying POS even way back then. But yes it definitely was on everyone's mind there for a while.

We had a good family friend die of it. They were my parents age. He was a deacon in our church but lead a double life on out of town trips. It's was a really big scandal in our small southern town. It messed it wife up mentally for a long time. She was a good person. When it hits that close to home it's a wake up call.
